Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid cross between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. These intelligent, loving pups make wonderful family pets and are one of the most popular designer dog breeds. Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes and coat types, so families can find the perfect pup to fit their home and lifestyle. These sociable dogs come with a low to non-shedding coat, so they can also bring joy to those with allergies.
Goldendoodles are a cross between Golden Retrievers and Poodles and typically have a wavy, low to non-shedding coat. Although Goldendoodles are considered low-shedding (especially compared to Golden Retrievers), there is no such thing as a “non-shedding” breed. Every dog will shed some hair. Whether it’s a few strands caught by a lint roller every now and then or a full blown floor-sweeping mess, all dogs are going to shed some hair.
Goldendoodles are a unique breed and therefore have unique dietary requirements and considerations. The best way to identify what not to feed a Goldendoodle is by consulting with your veterinarian or consulting reliable sources of pet nutrition information. Some people prefer to only feed Goldendoodles a homemade diet or a premium quality kibble. Generally speaking, it's best to avoid feeding Goldendoodles foods that are high in fat, sugar, or salt and any type of processed food.
To make sure your home is ready for your new Goldendoodle, there are some essential steps you should take. First, you should puppy-proof the area and make sure all harmful or dangerous objects are removed. This includes anything they may chew on, ingest, or lose small parts. Invest in appropriate toys that accommodate their need to chew and be proactive in keeping inappropriate items out of reach. Additionally, set up an area for your puppy such as a dog bed or crate, and make sure no cords are within reach. Establish house rules that everyone in the household should abide by.
Goldendoodles are considered to be a "medium-sized" breed, usually weighing between 20 and 65 pounds. A Goldendoodle is the result of a Golden Retriever mating with a Poodle which may account for the variation in the sizes seen in Goldendoodles. When considering size, Goldendoodles tend to fall somewhere between the smaller Retriever breeds and the larger Sheepdogs. Size standards are not established, but they typically reach heights of around 24 – 25 inches on average, with some exceptions being slightly taller or shorter depending on the parentage of the pup.
Goldendoodles are quite an active breed of dog, and should have a moderate amount of exercise on a daily basis to maintain a healthy balance. It's important to look at the size and age of the dog as well a smaller or younger Goldendoodle will likely need less exercise than a larger or older one. Depending on the individual dog, a suitable amount of exercise could range from at least 30 minutes each day, to several hours a day if they are larger or more energetic.
Goldendoodles are renowned for being friendly, gentle, and excellent family dogs. These unique breeds of Golden Retriever and Poodle are intelligent, loyal companions that are eager to please their owners and make for perfect playmates and guardians. What makes the Goldendoodle particularly attuned to family life is the combination of its friendly, outgoing nature with its remarkable trainability. As long as Goldendoodle owners provide consistent, positive training and reinforcement, these energetic and intelligent dogs will remain a reliable, devoted companion for years.
Training a Goldendoodle requires lots of patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start by teaching simple commands like sit, stay, and come as those are all basic building blocks of a good, obedient pup. Treats can be a great motivator, but it's also important to offer lots of praise as well. Use a friendly, inviting tone of voice and reward dogs for correct behaviors with verbal praise, along with an occasional treat. Be sure to set clear expectations and limits for your pup by providing gentle yet firm guidance.
