Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a crossbreed or hybrid dog, created by mixing the Poodle, a breed from France, and the Golden Retriever, originally from Scotland. Goldendoodles are considered a medium-sized breed that generally weigh anywhere from 50-90 lbs. Goldendoodles are very loyal and friendly, making them an excellent family pet. They are active dogs, and require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy.
Goldendoodles are considered to be a low-to-non-shedding breed. Their non-shedding characteristics come from their Poodle lineage, which results in less pet hair shedding around the house. However, Goldendoodles still need to be groomed on a regular basis and their coats can grow long, so regular brushing and trimming is recommended to prevent matting. While Goldendoodles may shed less than other breeds, it is still possible that they could experience some level of shedding.
Goldendoodles are usually fed high-quality kibble designed specifically for large breeds. It contains calcium, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. Because Goldendoodles are fairly active dogs, they require a diet that will give them the energy to stay healthy and fit. Additionally, if an owner chooses, they can provide their Goldendoodle with wet food a few times a week, to offer some variety and flavor to their diet.
Preparing for a Goldendoodle can be an exciting yet overwhelming task. To ensure the best for your pup, it is important to be ready for the arrival of your new family member. Start by setting aside money for the adoption and researching local laws and ordinances regarding ownership of a Goldendoodle. Once your pup is home, enroll your Goldendoodle in a puppy training class to promote good manners and proper socialization. Gather all the necessary supplies such as a collar and leash, food and water dishes, toothbrush, food and treats, crate, bed, toys, and grooming supplies.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, depending on the breeding lines. Most often they are considered to be medium-sized, typically between 20-30 lbs. and 17-20 inches tall. The smallest Goldendoodles can be found in Toy variety and reach 8-15 lbs. and 10-17 inches tall, and the largest Goldendoodles are the Maxi type, which can weigh between 55-85 lbs. and measure 21-26 inches tall.
The amount of exercise your Goldendoodle needs will vary depending on age, weight, and health. Generally, it's recommended to give a Goldendoodle at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, with a minimum of 3-4 sessions of 10 minutes each spent taking walks or playing. For an active, healthy adult Goldendoodle, it is beneficial to increase their daily exercise to 45-60 minutes. This should consist of long walks, sprinting, playing fetch, or participating in other activities.
Goldendoodles are renowned for their loving and devoted nature, and many families find them to be the perfect fit for their home. As a hybrid breed, they have the intelligence of a Poodle along with the friendly disposition of a Golden Retriever, making them gentle and easy to train. With proper socialization, Goldendoodles can attach to all family members, including children, so they are excellent family dogs. Furthermore, their lowto non-shedding coats make them an ideal breed for those with allergies.
Generally speaking, the specific amount of time required to train a Goldendoodle depends on the individual dog and his/her ability to learn. It’s important to keep your training sessions short and engaging in order to have the most successful outcome. We recommend setting aside at least 10 to 15 minutes for basic training sessions each day in order to ensure that your Goldendoodle is properly learning. If your pup is extremely motivated and able to pickup commands quickly, you may not need more than 10 minutes per day.
