Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed that can either be classified within the category of "Designer Dogs" or as a Poodle Mix. They were bred as a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and depending on their parentage, are typically a mix of all three breeds. Goldendoodles have an average lifespan of 10-15 years and come in a variety of colors, sizes, and coat types. Due to their loyal, energetic, and intelligent nature, Goldendoodles make wonderful family pets.
The Goldendoodle coat can range in texture and length depending on it's parentage. F1 Goldendoodles (50% Golden Retriever, 50% Poodle) tend to have a coat that may display any combination of either parent's coat type, from soft and wavy to course and curly. F1b Goldendoodles, which are a cross between an F1 Goldendoodle and a Poodle, usually have a higher percentage of curly to wavy fur and a less shedding coat.
Goldendoodles have sensitive digestive systems and can easily suffer from gastrointestinal issues due to poor diet choices. The best way to determine what not to feed a Goldendoodle is to speak to your veterinarian. They can provide tailored advice for your individual pet, taking into account any known potential allergies or past problems. It’s also important to carefully read the ingredients on any food or treats you give your Goldendoodle, to make sure they contain the right level of nutrients, with no artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, you should consider obtaining some essential items to ensure your pup is given the best care. These items include a quality dog food that is specially formulated for a Goldendoodle's health, food and water dishes, quality chew toys, a collar, leash, and ID tag, an adjustable bed and blankets, puppy pads and a crate with a door that can be secured shut, as well as grooming supplies such as brushes, nail clippers, and a shampoo meant for Goldendoodles.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes depending on what type of Goldendoodle is purchased. Standard Goldendoodles are usually anywhere from 20” to 28” tall at the shoulder when fully mature. A Miniature version of this dog will usually reach heights of 13" to 20" at the shoulder once fully grown. Finally, a Toy Goldendoodle typically stands 10” to 13” tall when fully grown. It is important to remember that every breed or mix of breeds of dogs have variation in size and it can depend on the size of the parent dogs.
Goldendoodles are active dogs that need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, an adult Goldendoodle needs around 3-4 hours of exercise each day, which includes two long walks, playtime, and other engaging activities. Exercise is also necessary for Goldendoodles to burn off excess energy and stay physically fit. Overtime, inadequate exercise may make them bored, destructive, and restless. It is important, however, to start slow and build up stamina and intensity over time.
Goldendoodles make wonderful pets for first-time owners, as these designer dogs are inherently loyal, loving, and easy-going. They are known for being highly intelligent, making them easy to train and adaptable to many situations, making them ideal companion dogs. Goldendoodles are also incredibly friendly and social, so they tend to get along with other animals and people, making them great for households with kids. In short, Goldendoodles can make loyal and loving family companions, while still being fairly low-maintenance and easy to train.
Training a Goldendoodle is a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your pup. Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, loyal and eager to please their owners. The best way to train your Goldendoodle is to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come and heel. Teach these commands in a positive and consistent manner. When your pup gets them right, give them lots of praise and rewards. As they become more comfortable with the commands, add in other exercises like agility and obstacle courses.
