Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are an increasingly popular crossbreed of the retriever and poodle, forming a hybrid with fewer genetic health problems than purebred dogs. As “designer” dogs, most often Goldendoodles are classified as hybrid or designer dogs, although some organizations may classify them as a separate breed. Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes and coat types, such as curly to wavy, straight, and smooth.
Goldendoodles are considered to be "hypoallergenic," meaning that they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction for those with allergies to animals than other breeds. It is important to remember, however, that no breed can be guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic. While their hypoallergenic properties tend to be inherited from their parent breeds, the Poodle and Golden Retriever, the environment and individual genetics of each Goldendoodle can greatly influence their allergy-inducing properties.
Goldendoodles have unique dietary needs, so they require special attention when picking out the right food for them. It's important to check labels and make sure you don't feed them anything that contains sugar, garlic, onions, raisins, grapes, artificial preservatives or colors, or any other ingredients that could be harmful to them. Additionally, give them plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, or an all-natural dry kibble to ensure they are getting the proper nutrition.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Goldendoodle requires dedication. To start, do your research on the breed and learn all you can about it so you will be prepared for when your puppy arrives. During the wait, purchase all necessary items, including puppy food, a crate, bedding and toys, so your pup will feel at home. Formulate a plan for daily routines, such as potty training and activity time, and research proper training methods so you'll be ready to start teaching your new puppy right away.
Goldendoodles come in a wide range of sizes, depending on their pairing of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Generally, they can be found in three distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard Goldendoodle will normally grow to be between 21 and 24 inches in height and weigh between 60 and 90 pounds. A Miniature Goldendoodle will usually reach a full grown height of 14 to 16 inches tall and weigh in between 20 and 35 pounds.
Goldendoodles absolutely love to swim! Not only is it great exercise for them, but it's their chance to cool off on hot days, and have some fun. Whether splashing around in their backyard pool, or wading in a nearby lake, Goldendoodles certainly know how to have a good time when they get the chance. Being retriever-poodle crosses, they are equipped with webbed feet and double-coats which make them great swimmers. Regularly taking them for a dip can help give them an opportunity to release energy and expend any pent up frustration.
Goldendoodles are some of the most loving and loyal breeds of dogs, making them ideal for family life. They are incredibly intelligent, which makes them easy to train and also able to quickly learn and understand your family's routine and commands. Goldendoodles can be as socially active or relaxed as their environment dictates, meaning they fit into family life no matter the size or environment. They get along great with both adults and children alike, making them patient and caring family dogs. Their good natured personalities and eagerness to please makes them eager to become a part of the family.
The amount of training and exercise that Goldendoodles need can vary depending on their size, age, and activity level. Generally speaking, Goldendoodles need at least an hour of exercise every day, which can include leisurely walks, playtime, or an agility course. Similarly, Goldendoodles should have at least 10-20 minutes of dedicated, undistracted training every day. This would involve activities like teaching commands, reinforcing obedience, and socializing with other pets or people.
