Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a mixed-breed, hybrid dog class that is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. These designer dogs are known for their intelligence and trainability, and are often found in a variety of coat colors such as cream, red, apricot, black, chocolate and light brown. Goldendoodles are typically good-natured, even-tempered, and very social, and make great house pets and companion animals. They are relatively low-shedders, making them an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies.
The Goldendoodle coat is typically soft and wavy with a silky texture. Most Goldendoodle coats are low shedding and maintenance free, making them the perfect pet for pet owners who suffer from allergies or have limited time for grooming. The colors of the Goldendoodle coat can range from white, cream, and apricot to brown, cafe, red, and occasionally parti-colored. With blends of Poodle and Golden Retriever coats, Goldendoodles can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat.
Goldendoodles are carnivorous animals and need to receive their nutrition from good quality dog food. While there are many types of foods that can be fed to Goldendoodles, some that should be avoided include snacks with fillers like corn, wheat, soy; chocolate; fruit pits and seeds; candy; bones; onions; grapes; raisins; raw eggs and meat; high-fat foods; and table scraps. Additionally, foods with artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives should also be avoided.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, there are some essential items you should purchase to ensure you are properly prepared. A comfortable dog bed, a leash and collar, a variety of quality treats, an adjustable grooming table, appropriate grooming tools, a brush, toys, and appropriate food and dishes are all essential. You will also need an identifying tag with your name and contact information. Along with these items, you may also need a crate and a strong fence in your yard to keep your Goldendoodle secure. Finally, it is a good idea to purchase pet insurance to cover medical expenses.
Goldendoodles typically reach full size between one and two years of age, depending on the generation of the Goldendoodle. When fully grown, standard Goldendoodles generally range in height from about 17 to 24 inches, can weigh anywhere between 40 and 65 pounds, and typically have a life expectancy of around 10 to 15 years. However, changes in diet and exercise have a strong influence on the size that a Goldendoodle will reach.
The exact amount of time it takes to properly walk your Goldendoodle will depend on a variety of factors, including age, health, and the energy level of the individual dog. Generally, however, a Goldendoodle should get at least one walk per day that lasts about 30 minutes. This should provide enough physical and mental stimulation, keeping them fit and healthy, as well as providing them with a period of stimulating exploration and exercise. Additionally, providing interactive playtime for 10 to 15 minutes two or three times a day can support your dog's sense of wellbeing.
Goldendoodles are wonderful, intelligent and affectionate dogs making them excellent family companions. They are loyal and friendly with their families and very loving towards children, making them an ideal pet for families with kids. Goldendoodles are also an incredibly social breed that can easily fit into large or small households. With proper training, they can be quite well-behaved and obedient. They are also known as excellent therapy and emotional support dogs due to their level of companionship and desire to please.
Training Goldendoodles requires a lot of patience and consistency on the part of the handler. It is recommended to dedicate at least 15-30 minutes per day to teach obedience and heel commands, offer mental stimulation, and ensure a healthy routine. Depending on the dog's age and individual needs, some owners may wish to increase this to 40, 50, or 60 minutes per day. However, breaks are important too, to ensure your pup doesn't become overwhelmed and remain engaged with the instruction.
