Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed of dog, originally bred in the United States by cross-breeding a golden retriever and a poodle. This unique breed is non-shedding, highly intelligent, and often have a kind and gentle temperament. Some fun facts about Goldendoodles include that they are actually very social dogs, and can even learn to herd sheep and cattle. Additionally, the thick fur of a Goldendoodle can come in a variety of colors including apricot, cream, tan, and dark red.
Whether or not a Goldendoodle will cause you to have allergies depends on the individual. A Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed that is developed from cross-breeding a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Goldendoodles often have low to non-shedding coats, which can minimize the amount of allergens produced. However, the individual may still have an allergy to the Goldendoodle's saliva or dander, which is the dead skin particles released from shedding fur.
Goldendoodles typically have many of the same dietary needs as other dogs, but they may have some unique requirements as well. Goldendoodles tend to be high-energy dogs, so their diet should ideally include quality protein and complex carbohydrates. Keep in mind that Goldendoodles have more fur than most other dog breeds, so they may need additional fatty acids to keep their coats healthy. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats are both thought to be especially beneficial for Goldendoodles, as well as foods that contain probiotics and prebiotics.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, make sure to get all of the necessary essentials for it to have a comfortable and healthy home. A large bed with plenty of room for it to stretch out, chew toys to help with teething, a metal water bowl that won't tip over, plenty of nutritious food, a collar with an ID tag attached, a leash for walks, treats and toys for training and mental stimulation, and grooming supplies such as brush, nail clippers, and shampoo. Additionally, establish a good vet and get all applicable vaccinations and medications.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, depending upon the mix of heritage breeds their parents are. For example, a Goldendoodle bred from a Standard Poodle and a Golden Retriever can range from 45 to more than 90 pounds! Alternatively, a Mini Goldendoodle, which is bred from a Miniature Poodle and a Golden Retriever, can be as small as 10 to 15 pounds.
Absolutely! Goldendoodles are natural swimmers who take to water with enthusiasm. They are intelligent, inquisitive, and love spending time outdoors. Few activities offer the combination of exercise and mental stimulation that swimming can—not to mention the fun! If your Goldendoodle is younger than twelve months, it's essential that you take safety precautions such as providing a flotation device to ensure that they don't tire too quickly. If your pup has been swimming frequently since puppyhood, then swimming can provide the perfect way to keep them healthy and active while having a fantastic time.
Goldendoodles are generally very amiable and friendly dogs, making them a great choice for families with children. They are usually playful and affectionate, and get along well with kids. With proper socialization and training, Goldendoodles can learn to be gentle and patient with children, and develop a strong bond with them that can last for years. Goldendoodles enjoy playing games, going on walks, and cuddling which makes them an ideal companion for children. With proper care and attention, Goldendoodles can make an excellent addition to any family.
Training a Goldendoodle requires a different approach based on the age of the dog. For puppies, five minutes per day of focused interaction is recommended; as the dog matures, this time can be steadily increased. When the Goldendoodle is at least six months old, about 15 minutes of training each day is a good starting point. As the dog gets comfortable with commands and behaviors, the length of the training sessions can be extended gradually. An adult Goldendoodle should get at least 30 minutes of practice every day.
