Goldendoodles are a hybrid canine, created by mixing the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. They are part of the hybrid, designer dog category, in which already-established purebred dogs are intentionally crossed with one another in order to give the offspring unique characteristics. Goldendoodles vary in coat type and color, size, and temperament -as do all hybrid dogs. Common traits though, are an intelligence and playfulness -similar to the Golden Retriever -mixed with the nonshedding attribute of a Poodle.
Goldendoodles are considered to be low-shedding dogs. While they still do shed, their coats are much less prone to producing excess hair than other breeds. As they are a cross-breed with a combination of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, they tend to have a full, thick coat that is easy to groom and maintain. Furthermore, their coat consists of curly and wavy hair that is less likely to spread throughout your home than straight hair.
Goldendoodles are known to have high energy levels and have specific dietary needs to remain in optimal health. Generally, it's recommended to feed a high-quality dog food that is approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Goldendoodles require a balanced diet with the right combination of carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Any foods consumed should be free of preservatives and fillers. In addition to dog food, Goldendoodles can also enjoy healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, cooked eggs, and lean meats.
Preparing for a Goldendoodle can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Before your new pup arrives, consider stocking up on items like a comfortable crate, chew toys, a comfortable bed, and plenty of healthy treats. Research puppy safety and check out local obedience schools and animal clinics. You should also find out what type of food the breeder has been feeding your pup and decide if you will transition them to a new brand. Socialize your pup early by exposing them to different people, animals, and environments.
As Goldendoodles are a mix of two different breeds a Poodle and a Golden Retriever the size of your puppy will depend a great deal on the particular mix of genes that your puppy has inherited. Generally speaking, mature Goldendoodle puppies can grow to be somewhere between 20 and 90 pounds. The overall size of your Goldendoodle will be determined not only by the genetic makeup of its parents, but also environmental factors such as diet, exercise and even the amount of space they have to move around in.
Goldendoodles need daily exercise to stay physically healthy and mentally stimulated; an hour or two each day of intense physical exercise is suggested for these energetic breeds. Playing fetch, going for walks, long runs, swimming, agility and obedience training are all good activities for Goldendoodles. They should also be given plenty of opportunity for supervised free play, as this is important for their physical and mental health.
