A Goldendoodle is a hybrid dog, a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes ranging from petite Miniature Goldendoodles to the more sizable Standard Goldendoodles. They have a wavy, and sometimes curly, coat, which can be either golden or black depending on the breed of the parents. Although a Goldendoodle's exact temperament depends on the bloodline of their parents, they tend to be affectionate, loyal, gentle, and intelligent making them great companions.
The Goldendoodle coat is a combination of the infamous Golden Retriever and the ever-fluffy Poodle. It usually comprises of a thick, curly, or wavy coat that holds a wide range of colors and shades. Goldendoodles generally do not shed much, making them ideal for those with allergies. Depending on the generation, some Goldendoodles have more of a Golden Retriever or Poodle-like coat.
Goldendoodles require a diet tailored to their size and activity level in order to stay healthy. Opt for a grain-free, premium, and high-quality dog food that has the right balance of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients; make sure to choose a formula that is specifically made for Goldendoodles. When adding wet food, select a low-fat, high-fiber, and high-protein product.
Before bringing your new Goldendoodle home, preparation is key! Make sure your home is Goldendoodle-proof; consider baby gates or enclosures to prevent your pup from accessing certain areas of the house. Make sure there is a designated potty area outdoors, and that there are plenty of designated chew toys throughout the home. Be sure to get your pup all of the necessary supplies, such as a bed, crate, food and water bowls, collar and leash. You'll also need to establish basic obedience and housebreaking rules around the home to avoid potential behavioral issues down the road.
Goldendoodles typically come in a range of sizes, varying from small to large depending on the breeding of their parents. Generally, a small Goldendoodle can reach a size between 10 and 15 inches tall at the shoulder, while a medium Goldendoodle is typically 15 to 20 inches in height. The largest Goldendoodles can exceed 20 inches at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 45 pounds to over 90 pounds, depending on the mix of their parents.
Goldendoodles, as with any other breed of dog, require varying amounts of exercise based on age, personality, and activity level. Generally, Goldendoodles should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, though anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours per day is ideal. Depending on the energy level of the individual dog, shorter walks, longer hikes, agility classes, or even trips to the dog park can be a great way to get your Goldendoodle the exercise they need.
