Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They typically have curly, wavy, or even straight coats that typically require regular grooming. Goldendoodles are intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dogs, making them great family pets. They can be easily trained due to their eagerness to please their owners. Goldendoodles are relatively low in shedding and can be hypoallergenic if they inherit more of their Poodle side. They are a medium-sized breed and typically reach weights of up to 70 pounds.
Goldendoodles can vary from being hypoallergenic to nonshedding, so it really depends on the individual. While all dogs can cause an allergic reaction in those that are particularly sensitive, Goldendoodles are often bred to be low-shedding and thus are often considered to be better for people with allergies. To reduce the chance of eliciting an allergic reaction, always keep the Goldendoodle well-groomed and bathed regularly.
Goldendoodles typically have a diet recommended by their vet that includes both wet and dry food. Depending on their age, size, and other health factors, the needed amounts and type of food may change. In general, these excellent family companions do need a source of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for their overall health. Wet food is extremely important for hydration and healthy organs while dry food should include whole grains as an important source of carbohydrates. Supplements such as fish oil are also beneficial for their fur and overall wellness.
Preparation is key to having a successful and fulfilling relationship with your Goldendoodle. Before bringing your new pup home, research their breed-specific needs. Goldendoodles are known for their intelligence and the time you spend training your pup will surely pay off. Brush up on your knowledge of crate training and housebreaking to ensure your home is a comfortable environment for your furry friend. Ensure that all products, including food and treats are appropriate for your pup's age and health needs. Additionally, look into doggy proofing your home, so your pup is never in danger.
Goldendoodles vary in size, so they are not always considered "big dogs". Depending on the specific mix, some may be larger-than-average while others may stay small. For example, standard Goldendoodles range in size from approximately 30-40 pounds, while mini Goldendoodles can stay under 30 pounds. However, considering the larger Golden Retriever parent and the smaller Poodle parent, many Goldendoodles as a whole are half-way between those two sizes.
Goldendoodles are highly active dogs, eager to romp and play. These intelligent animals need regular mental and physical stimulation throughout the day to keep their minds sharp and their bodies fit. They exhibit an impressive level of stamina and energy that can be harnessed in a variety of fun activities such as long walks, agility courses, fetch, hiking, swimming, and playing with toys. With these lively pups, you can expect plenty of exercise-related fun for you and your furry companion!
Goldendoodles are generally known to get along very well with children. They are sweet-natured, gentle and highly intelligent, making them an excellent companion for any family. They often demonstrate great eagerness and enthusiasm when interacting with children, and are patient and affectionate with them. In addition, Goldendoodles' size, low-shedding coat, and relatively low energy level make them good playmates for kids. Of course, as with any pet, it's important to practice supervision and safety when introducing them to children of any age.
It is recommended that Goldendoodle owners train their pup for at least twenty minutes per day on average in order to ensure a well-behaved and obedient pup. Training time should be divided into several short sessions throughout the day in order to keep your pup attentive and engaged. It is important to start with basics such as potty training, basic commands, and positive reinforcement, and add new skills as your pup grows and matures. Additionally, having daily playtime with your pup is important to strengthen the bond between you and your pup.
