Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid, or designer, breed of canine created by crossing a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They are considered to be part of the sporting or utility group of dogs by the American Kennel Club due to the intelligence, athleticism, and strong work ethic characteristics they possess. Goldendoodles are affectionate, loyal, and generally friendly animals that make excellent family pets. They have a low to non-shedding coat which makes them excellent pets for allergy sufferers. Goldendoodles are easy to train and love to please their owners.
Goldendoodles are considered to be a hybrid or designer breed, typically consisting of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, which both have curly coats and minimize shedding. Generally, Goldendoodles do not shed very much, or not at all. Depending on the coat type and genetics of the parents, the Goldendoodle will typically have a low to minimal shedding coat, meaning they will not leave hair all over your furniture or the floor like most other breeds. They are also ideal for those who have allergies as their coats trap less dander.
Goldendoodles, a cross between Golden Retrievers and Poodles, will typically eat the same kind of food that any other large breed of dog would eat. A high quality, well-balanced dry dog food should be selected that contains natural, healthy ingredients. Additionally, owners should supplement their Goldendoodle's diet with fresh vegetables, meat, fish, and other healthy foods to ensure their pet is getting the proper nutrition.
Before getting your Goldendoodle, you'll want to purchase a few essentials to get you and your pup ready for all the fun ahead. To start, you should get all the necessary puppy supplies such as a food and water bowls, a collar, a doggie bed, a leash, and some toys. It's also important to pick up some puppy-specific food, shampoo, and other health supplies and be sure to buy some treats for training. You may want to consider enrolling your pup in obedience classes for more guidance and socialization.
Goldendoodles come in three basic sizes small, medium, and large. It's important to note that there are some variations between breeders when it comes to defining the size of a Goldendoodle, so it's a good idea to do your research and talk to the breeder about what size you're interested in. Small Goldendoodles are usually around 15 to 30 pounds, medium Goldendoodles range in size from 30 to 45 pounds, and large Goldendoodles weigh 45 pounds or more.
A Goldendoodle needs about 30-60 minutes of exercise or activity every day. How much depends on age, level of activity, and underlying health concerns. Generally speaking, puppies require more exercise than adult dogs, and active breeds, like Goldendoodles, need more activities overall. Quality walks and playtime are important for their physical and mental health. Leash walks are a good way to keep your Goldendoodle stimulated and engaged while providing important exercise. Outdoor play like fetch and agility exercises are also beneficial in stimulating physical and mental activity.
Goldendoodles are an ideal choice for families with children because they are incredibly loving and gentle with kids. Highly intelligent and easy to train, Goldendoodles get along very well with other family members, both adults and children, thanks to their friendly and outgoing nature. They exhibit an eagerness to please, making it easy to establish and maintain consistent rules. A Goldendoodle's easy-going and laid back temperament means that they don't get easily riled up or excited, which can be beneficial when it comes to kids who are more active and bouncy.
Training your Goldendoodle should be a positive and rewarding experience for both of you. Start off by forming a bond with your pup and creating a consistent schedule. Then, introduce commands like sit, stay, come, and give. Once you can get a good response from a few core commands, you can begin teaching more complex commands like running an agility course. It's a good idea to sign up for puppy or dog obedience classes as well. These can be fun and help your pup socialize and strengthen the bond with you at the same time.
