Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs that are created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. They are often considered a 'designer breed' as they are sought after due to their combination of traits from both breeds. On average, Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, friendly, and have low shedding coats. On average, depending on the size of the Poodle used in the breeding combination, they are often larger than a Golden Retriever but smaller than a Standard Poodle. Goldendoodles can range from 10-100 lbs. There are three main coat types:
Goldendoodles have a unique and highly sought-after coat that can vary from wavy to straight. Depending on the breeding of the Goldendoodle, the coat can range from soft and silky to more wiry and coarse. The color of the coat can vary, too, and can include cream, apricot, red, black, or combinations of these colors. In general, Goldendoodles can be easier to groom than other breeds, as they do not shed as much as other dogs. Plus, they require less frequent brushing and bathing than some other breeds.
Goldendoodles are typically fed a combination of dry kibble, canned food, and home-cooked food. In addition, it's important to make sure that Goldendoodles get adequate exercise and supplementation of vitamins and minerals with a well-balanced diet. If Goldendoodles are eating a purpose-made formula, the food should include proteins from lamb, chicken, fish, and eggs as well as complex carbohydrates, probiotics, fatty acids, and antioxidants. Fresh vegetables and fruits should be supplemented to help ensure a balanced diet and provide additional nutrients and vitamins.
Prior to bringing home your new Goldendoodle, it's important to take some basic steps in order to prepare your home. First, cover any power cords, wires, and other items that may present a safety hazard to your dog. Next, secure items that may be destroyed if left unsupervised, such as shoes, clothing, or toys. Place any food or cleaning supplies in closed secured cabinets that your pet cannot access. Provide a designated spot for the Goldendoodle to sleep that's out of the way from your daily living space.
Goldendoodles can range anywhere from 10 to 35 pounds in weight when fully grown, depending on the size of the parents breeds. If you're looking for a more accurate estimate of how large your Goldendoodle puppy may be, consider researching the size of the parents breeds. Golden Retrievers are typically around 55 to 75 pounds and Poodles come in three sizes mini (5 to 15 pounds), medium (15 to 30 pounds), and standard (45 to 70 pounds). Crosses of these sizes will produce puppies ranging from 10 to 35 pounds in weight.
Goldendoodles are incredibly active dogs that need lots of daily physical and mental exertion to remain healthy, both physically and emotionally. Generally, an adult Goldendoodle will need about one hour of physical exercise per day, either through walks, swimming, agility courses, obedience training, or other activities that will keep the dog's body in good shape. Additionally, games and activities that stimulate the mind should be included in the daily routine to keep the pup's brain sharp and agile.
