Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are considered to be a hybrid-mix breed of dog. They are a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. Goldendoodles are popular because of their family-friendly nature, intelligence, and their low-shedding coats. Goldendoodles make for great pets as they are known to be very loyal and affectionate. They are usually good around children and other pets, although they may need help from obedience class to manage their high energy levels.
Goldendoodles typically have a soft, slightly wavy coat. Depending on their set of genes, they may have coats that are more or less wavy, and they can be among the widest range of colors and patterns within the doodle family. Goldendoodles' coats tend to be lower shedding than a Golden Retriever, although they will still lose some hair. The breed is usually hypoallergenic as the coat is mostly composed of longer guard hairs that keep allergens out rather than a traditional undercoat.
Goldendoodles, as a breed, typically do not have any unique dietary needs and, similar to other breeds, they will generally thrive on a diet of quality, balanced nutrition. It is important to feed them food that is designed for their size and age. Smaller puppies will need food designed for smaller breeds than adults of the same breed, for instance. A high-quality, age-appropriate dry kibble should make up the bulk of their diet.
When getting a Goldendoodle, it is essential to purchase all the necessary items for his care and wellbeing. Some items that are advisable to buy include an appropriately sized crate, dog bowls, a leash, collar, dog tags, and treats. You should also have rawhide chews, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a variety of toys, grooming brush, nail clippers and a bed for your pup. Additionally, you'll need a quality shampoo to bathe your Goldendoodle, as well as vitamins and supplements to keep him healthy.
Goldendoodles typically reach their adult size between 12 and 24 months of age. Depending on their parents (Poodle and Golden Retriever), Goldendoodles typically will weigh between 15-90 pounds, measuring at 15-24 inches tall. That being said, the range of sizes makes them a great fit for a variety of homes from apartment dwellers to acreage owners. It is relatively easy to estimate the size of a Goldendoodle at the adult stage, allowing for a much clearer understanding of what size pet to expect.
The amount of exercise your Goldendoodle will need depends on their age and energy level. Generally, it's recommended that adult Goldendoodles receive at least one hour of exercise per day however, this can be broken into increments of smaller walks and playtime sessions throughout the day. When it comes to young puppies, it's best to start them off with shorter bursts of activity and then gradually increase, starting with 5-15 minute walks according to their age.
Goldendoodles are a popular breed of dog due to their good temperament and trainability, which makes them an excellent choice for families. Goldendoodles can provide loads of joy and companionship, as they are great with children and are very loyal. They may not be as large as other breeds of dog, but they do provide lots of love and security for a family. Goldendoodles require plenty of exercise, training and socialization, but offer many benefits, such as being low-shedders, generally good with other pets, and tend to be very laid back.
Training any canine of any breed can be challenging initially, but Goldendoodles have a reputation as intelligent, friendly and eager to please. With patience, consistency and positive reinforcement, training a Goldendoodle should become relatively easy. Goldendoodles tend to learn quickly and respond well to commands and directions. If you're patient and consistent with praise and treats, your Goldendoodle will soon learn to search for positive attention, and you will be able to teach him all kinds of obedience skills.
