Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are an extraordinary hybrid breed of dog, typically a combination of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. It is an intelligent, low-shedding, and easy to train breed that celebrates the best qualities of both parent breeds. Goldendoodles can vary in size from very small (toy size) to quite large (giant size). With the focus on the friendly yet energetic nature of both parent breeds, Goldendoodles often make fantastic family pets with a cheerful disposition, strong play drive, and love of children.
Goldendoodles vary in their shedding levels, as not all Goldendoodles are created equal in the shedding department. While some may have a minimal amount of shedding, some may have a moderate to heavy amount. However, generally speaking, Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed that tends to be more non-shedding than other breeds. This is because they are a blend of two non-shedding breeds, the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. If you are looking for a breed with minimal shedding, a Goldendoodle may be the right choice for you!
Goldendoodles can get sick or develop allergies if fed certain foods, so it is important to know what not to feed them. Generally, it is best to avoid giving them chocolate, coffee drinks, grapes, raisins, onions, raw potatoes, salt, sugar, alcohol, yeast dough, and certain nuts. Before introducing a new food to your Goldendoodle, consider getting advice from your veterinarian or a certified animal nutritionist who can provide personalized dietary advice.
One great way to become the best puppy parent while waiting for your Goldendoodle is to do some research! Learn all you can about Goldendoodle breeds, their specific needs, and the best methods for raising them. Taking a puppy/dog training course is also a great idea. Staying connected to and interacting with others who own Goldendoodles is invaluable. Additionally, start gathering the puppy supplies you'll need like toys, bedding, treats, a collar and leash so you'll be prepared once your puppy arrives. Be sure to socialize your puppy as soon as possible;
Goldendoodles can range in size, so while some are considered small, others are larger. Depending on the size of a specific Goldendoodle, they can be classified as small, medium, or large. Individually, their size can vary between 5-45 lbs and 12-24 inches in height. Therefore, it is not always the case that Goldendoodles are small, and it really depends on the size of the specific dog.
The exact amount of time you should walk your Goldendoodle each day will depend on its age, size, and activity level. Generally, if your Goldendoodle is healthy and under the age of 6 months, it should get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. If it's between 6 months and 2 years old, 30 to 45 minutes of exercise is recommended. For Goldendoodles over 2 years old, 45 to 60 minutes of exercise per day is ideal. Be sure to gradually increase the amount of exercise and adjust the time as needed for your Goldendoodle's individual needs.
Goldendoodles can make a great fit for first-time owners, as these dogs are known for their affectionate, loyal, and friendly natures. Goldendoodles are very trainable and tolerant with children, and they are also intelligent and affectionate, making them both friend and valued family member. They can also be fairly low maintenance with minimal shedding and their tendency to stay relatively smaller. That being said, they require regular exercise and a little bit of grooming to maintain a healthy coat.
Training a Goldendoodle is not necessarily easy; however, with consistent practice, patience, and positive reinforcement, it is definitely doable. Goldendoodles, like other breeds of dogs, need to learn the basics such as commands (e.g., sit, stay, come, leave it, etc.), leash walking, potty training, and more. They also need to learn to strongly obey their owner, and this requires continuous practice and reinforcement. Depending on your dog's age and background, this process may vary from a few weeks to a few months.
