Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Poodle. They are a gentle, friendly, and highly obedient breed that is eager to please and bond with its owners. Goldendoodles are very intelligent and easy to train and excel at obeying commands. They are well-mannered and social, so they do well in a variety of home settings but especially thrive in a family home.
Goldendoodles are not known to be a particularly allergenic breed, however it is possible for those who are allergic to dogs to experience symptoms while in contact with one. Those with severe allergies should consult with their doctor prior to getting a Goldendoodle and accounting for other macro and micro-factors that play into potential allergies. However, many people who suffer from allergies are able to comfortably have Goldendoodles as pets without any issue whatsoever.
Goldendoodles are generally healthy dogs that can thrive on a wide variety of diets. However, since they tend to be on the larger side and have high energy levels, they will do best with a premium kibble that contains a balance of carbohydrates, combine with animal proteins, healthy fats and Fiber. For optimal health, look for diets that contain ingredients that are natural sources of key vitamins and minerals.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, you should make sure your home is equipped with the right essentials to give your pup the best quality of life. Start by selecting a comfortable and roomy crate, to be used for potty training. You'll also need a good, comfortable leash and collar to go on those walks. Grooming supplies like a toothbrush, slicker brush, comb and nail clippers are absolutely essential to foster healthy physical and mental health in your pup.
Goldendoodles can be considered big dogs, depending on their size and build. Generally, Goldendoodles weigh anywhere from 45 to well over 90 pounds and can stand as tall as two feet at the shoulder. Their average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years also contributes to their size classification. Because of their size, Goldendoodles are likely to require more space in your home and may require more exercise or playtime than a smaller dog. While many owners find their big-dog size a benefit, they often require a little more care and consideration.
Goldendoodles need a moderate amount of exercise that should balance physical activity and mental stimulation. On average, they need around 30-60 minutes of exercise each day which would include activities like walking, running, fetching, and swimming. It would also be beneficial to include several 10-15 minute play sessions in the day to help get their energy out and mental stimulation. If left alone for too long without a good stimulating activity, Goldendoodles may become bored and get into trouble such as chewing furniture or barking excessively.
Goldendoodles make wonderful family dogs; in fact, they are amazingly versatile, intelligent, and sociable creatures that are perfect for families of all sizes. This breed is known for its kind and gentle temperament and is great with children, making it a wonderful addition to any household. Goldendoodles are highly trainable and obedient, making them excellent pets for households that need structure. Additionally, they require minimal grooming and their friendly personalities make them great with other pets. Overall, Goldendoodles are superb family pets that bring lots of love, loyalty, and energy to the home.
Training your Goldendoodle is a great way to strengthen your bond and help them learn appropriate behavior. To get the best results, consistency and positive reinforcement are key. Begin by using a clicker or other reward marker that your pup can associate with a reward, such as a piece of food. Start training in short sessions that are around 10 minutes long and identify a cue associated with the behavior you want so your Goldendoodle can learn what is expected. You can build on those behaviors with practice and repetition. Whenever your Goldendoodle acts appropriately, reward them immediately with a treat or gesture.
