Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid of two very popular purebred breeds of dogs: a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. As such, they are not a specific class of dog, since as a hybrid they technically don't have a breed standard established by a Kennel Club. Goldendoodles are typically thought of as being hypoallergenic, throughout each generation of breeding, as they carry genes for both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle.
Goldendoodles can be low-shedding or non-shedding, depending on their particular genetic makeup and coat type. Hypoallergenic Goldendoodle coats are generally described as having loose, wavy curls, and little to no shedding. However, some Goldendoodles may still have a moderate shedding coat type even if it's not as pronounced as other breeds. Ultimately, the shedding propensity of an individual Goldendoodle's coat depends largely on its genetics. It's advisable to consult with the breeder about the specific coat type before adopting.
Goldendoodles require a specific type of diet, as they are a hybrid of two popular canine breeds. Depending on their individual needs, Goldendoodles can benefit from food made specifically for their breed or a high-quality, grain-free, all-natural diet. For puppies, a diet with at least 32 percent protein and 18 percent fat is best, while for adult Goldendoodles, 26 percent protein and 16 percent fat is recommended.
Preparing for a Goldendoodle can be easy and enjoyable! Start by researching the breed and its exercise, temperament, and grooming needs so you know what to expect. Make sure to puppy-proof your home and minimize any potential hazards that could be dangerous to your pup. Purchase the necessary supplies such as a collar and leash, crate, and food and water bowls, and be sure to doggie-proof your yard if you have one.
Goldendoodles typically grow to medium-to-large sizes, depending on how they are bred. Generally, they can grow between 45-90 pounds and reach heights of 14-24 inches. At maturity, Goldendoodles vary in size based on the type of Doodle, the generation of the Doodle, and the amount of Poodle genes from each parent. Usually, the more Poodle genes, the smaller the Goldendoodle.
Goldendoodles are highly active dogs due to their parent breeds—Golden Retriever and Poodle—which tend to be energetic. With Goldendoodles, you can expect to get a pup that loves to go on long walks, runs, and swims. They are also good companions for outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, or playing Frisbee in the park. Additionally, they do great with agility courses and organized dog sports, such as rally or dock diving. Their intelligence makes them easily trainable, so you can even teach them advanced tricks or commands.
Goldendoodles are generally very friendly and patient with children. They typically love the attention they get from children, and their mild temperaments mean they rarely react negatively to kids. With proper socialization from a young age, Goldendoodles can be reliable and loving companions to children and adults alike. They are very loyal, intelligent, and friendly, making them a great addition to any family. Goldendoodles get along great with kids and make ideal playmates, as they will join in their energetic play while also being gentle and understanding when the activity is too much for them.
Training your Goldendoodle is relatively straightforward with the right approach. Start by choosing positive reinforcement techniques that are known to create lasting results. This means rewarding your pup's good behavior with treats or praise and avoiding punishing them. Consistency is key, as all commands and behaviors should be taught with the same expectations so your pup knows exactly what’s expected of them. Plan training sessions for no longer than 20 minutes and make sure to end each session on a positive note. Be patient with your pup and take breaks in between sessions if needed avoid becoming overly frustrated.
