Questions & Answers
A Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed of dog, created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. As such, these dogs tend to have the best characteristics of both breeds, combining the intelligence and playful nature of a Poodle with the friendly loyalty of a Golden Retriever. Goldendoodles come in multiple sizes and coat types, depending on which parent breed is predominant in the cross. Generally speaking, these dogs require regular brushing and clipping, and they need plenty of exercise and socialization.
Generally, Goldendoodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. Though it is not certain that all Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic, they are typically known to shed very little, making them a generally better option for those with allergies. This is because their coat is a mix of their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents, both of which are breeds known to shed much less than many other breeds.
Goldendoodles can be prone to obesity so be mindful of what you are feeding them. When in doubt about what to feed, consult your veterinarian. The best rule of thumb is to avoid giving them any human foods that are high in fat or sugar, such as sweets, pork, and fried foods. Additionally, do not feed them food intended for other animals, as it may contain unhealthy ingredients. Make sure to provide them with a balanced diet of healthy, whole-grain foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and high-quality proteins including lean meat, eggs, and certain fish.
To prepare your home for a new Goldendoodle puppy, you should first be sure to doggy-proof your home. Remove anything they might be able to chew or cause harm to, including small items, low hanging wires, house plants, dangerous objects, and items like books, magazines, etc. You'll also need to secure any gates and fences in your yard. Make sure your yard, kennel, or other designated area is not too small, and that it is free of debris.
Goldendoodles are typically classified as a mediumto large-sized breed, depending on the generation of the dog. Many Goldendoodles are described as being the equivalent of a Standard Poodle in size, making them usually classified as a large pet. On average, male Goldendoodles reach heights of up to 22-24 inches and weigh between 50-75 pounds, while female Goldendoodles range between 18-21 inches in height and can weigh between 40-60 pounds.
Absolutely! Running with your Goldendoodle can be a great way to provide mental and physical stimulation as well as a bonding experience for the both of you. However, make sure that you are running at a comfortable pace for your pup and that he or she isn't overstressed. It's important to make sure they are conditioned properly to avoid any potential issues. Start in short spurts and then gradually work up to longer time periods as they become acclimated to running.
Goldendoodles can be wonderful family companions who get along living with children. As with any animal, early socialization is the key to successful interaction between kids and their pet. Because Goldendoodles are social, intelligent, and affectionate dogs, they can be an excellent choice for a family pet that gets along with children. Often, they make an effort to form strong connections with kids and can become devoted companions. It is important to note, however, that with any new dog, children should be made aware of how to safely interact with their pet.
The amount of training minutes per day needed for Goldendoodles depends on the dog's age, size, breed, activity levels, and behavioral issues. A good rule of thumb is to provide at least 20 minutes of active training per day for adult Goldendoodles, but if the dog is young or has difficulty concentrating then it should be more. For puppies, it's best to start with shorter training sessions of 5 to 10 minutes and work up from there. Even several short sessions throughout the day are ideal.
