Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a mix between the Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They are highly intelligent, loving, friendly and sociable, making them an ideal pet. Goldendoodles tend to shed minimally, and they come in a variety of sizes, ranging from mini to standard. Though Goldendoodles require regular grooming and exercise, they make great companions with a cheerful and playful spirit. Goldendoodles also have a reputation of being relatively easy to train due to their intelligence and loyalty.
Goldendoodles may be considered hypoallergenic depending on the coat type. Goldendoodles are designer breeds and can inherit any of the coat traits of either their parent breeds, the Golden Retriever and Poodle. A Goldendoodle with a straight or wavy coat could shed more than a hypoallergenic Goldendoodle with a curly or corded coat, which could be less likely to cause allergies. Additionally, the amount of protein in urine and saliva greatly affects a person's allergies.
Goldendoodles can have special dietary needs, depending on their age, breed, and health. Puppies, for example, may require more protein-rich foods to ensure proper growth. Older Goldendoodles may need foods that are easy to digest and are low in fat. Because Goldendoodles have long, silky coats, they often need high-quality foods that are also packed with omega fatty acids to help keep the coat soft and shiny. Additionally, Goldendoodles with a tendency to become overweight could benefit from food specifically designed for weight loss and maintenance.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Goldendoodle requires preparation and dedication. Firstly, make sure that you have adequate space at home to accommodate your pup. Secondly, get any necessary supplies such as puppy food, bedding, crates and toys ahead of time. Thirdly, research dog-friendly parks, pet stores, and grooming services in your area before collecting him so that you can take him on exciting adventures from an early age.
Goldendoodles can vary in size depending on their generation. For example, an F1 Goldendoodle (the result of a purebred Poodle mated with a purebred Golden Retriever) is typically considered a medium-size dog, weighing between 50-70lbs and standing 20-24 inches tall at the shoulder when full-grown. An F1b Goldendoodle (the result of a purebred Poodle crossed with an F1 Goldendoodle), is typically a smaller Goldendoodle.
The amount of walking you should give your Goldendoodle depends on its age, general activity level, and of course the size of your pup. Generally, for an adult Goldendoodle, about 30 minutes of exercise a day should be sufficient, including a period of brisk walking. However, younger puppies will need more frequent walks for shorter durations of time; perhaps 20 to 30 minutes several times per day. The goal is to provide your pooch with enough exercise to keep them stimulated and energized but not so much that it exhausts them.
Absolutely, Goldendoodles are wonderful family dogs with a gentle, sweet and affectionate nature. Known for their friendliness and gentle disposition, they are very good with children of all ages and are especially patient and gentle with small kids. Because of their high intelligence and eagerness to please, Goldendoodles are easily trained and respond well to positive reinforcement. They learn quickly and are willing to go the extra mile to please their humans. Additionally, their hypoallergenic coat makes them ideal for households with allergy sufferers.
Training a Goldendoodle is an easier process than some breeds as they have an inherent desire to please and will respond well to positive reinforcement. Goldendoodles are highly adaptable and intelligent, so they can learn and understand commands quickly. That being said, they may need to be motivated with treats or playtime to retain focus and stay interested in the training. With consistency, patience, and an upbeat attitude, you should be able to effectively train your Goldendoodle with ease.
