Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are one of the most popular and beloved canine breeds due to their friendly and social nature. They are incredibly intelligent and make wonderful family pets. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Goldendoodles, however, is that they are a cross between two established breeds Golden Retrievers and Poodles. As such, they have the best qualities of both parents the intelligence, eagerness to please, and charm of the Golden Retriever, paired with the agility and non-shedding features of the poodle.
Goldendoodles typically have a medium-length, wavy coat that is often either partially or completely shaggy. This thick and soft coat is usually a mix of their Poodle and Golden Retriever parent's coats. It can have colors ranging from light golden to dark red. Most Goldendoodles require regular brushing to maintain the look of their coat; however, because the coat is curly, it can also tangle easily and need more frequent brushing. The coat also requires occasional trims to keep it looking neat.
Goldendoodles are a large breed of dog that are typically very active and require a balanced diet to stay strong. As they are large, they need food that is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fats. It's important to choose a food that is specifically tailored to their size, age, and activity level. Look for a food that has essential vitamins and minerals for your pup and something that will make them feel full and fueled enough to get through the day. If in doubt, speak to your veterinarian to see what food might work best for your Goldendoodle.
To get your home ready for a new Goldendoodle, you should start by making sure that any household hazards are removed. Secure cords, remove breakables and furniture with small spaces that could entice the pup to squeeze in and explore, and ensure that any poison control items, such as cleaning products, are out of reach. You should also check your home for any potential escape routes since Goldendoodles are inquisitive and can become quite the escape artists. Make sure door and window screens are secure and install a secure fence if needed.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, depending on the size of its two parent breeds. Most Goldendoodles range in size from approximately 15 to 20 inches at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 15 pounds for a miniature version to greater than 90 pounds for a giant variety. Miniature Goldendoodles are generally around 11 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder, with weights ranging from 15 to 30 pounds. Medium Goldendoodles are commonly 18 to 20 inches in height and can weigh anywhere from 30 to 45 pounds.
Goldendoodles are an active breed that needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy. The amount and intensity of exercise will depend on the individual, but even adult Goldendoodles need to be taken for daily walks and should have access to regular outdoor activities or playtime. Depending on the age of the Goldendoodle, it will need exercise anywhere from 20-60 minutes a day; puppies need even more exercise to ensure they grow up healthy and strong. Exercise can not only include walking or running but also playtime or activities that let the dog think like puzzles and agility courses.
Goldendoodles are typically a great family pet, and they are often excellent with children. Goldendoodles are known to be patient, loving, and gentle dogs, which makes them very suitable for life with kids. They tend to be non-aggressive and very tolerant, so they typically get along with children well. Goldendoodles also have a playful nature, so they will generally provide plenty of fun for kids. They have been described by many families as perfect pets for family life, especially when children are involved.
While no two Goldendoodles are exactly alike, training one is typically not difficult. Goldendoodles are usually rather intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement, making them a great match for reward-based training methods. When paired with consistency and patience, you can help your Goldendoodle become an obedient, well-mannered pup. That said, don't expect perfection overnight it typically takes months of training and socialization for your pooch to grow into the companion you'd like them to be.
