Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are an amazing mix of two awesome breeds: the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. This creates a breed that is highly intelligent, energetic, funny, loyal, and generally excellent with people and other animals. Unlike many purebred breeds, a Goldendoodle doesn't need extensive grooming and can be low-shedding or even non-shedding. They also make excellent service and therapy dogs for those suffering from medical conditions. What makes Goldendoodles truly unique is their intelligence, charisma, and willingness to please.
Goldendoodles are often classified as a low to non-shedding breed, meaning they may still shed but with less intensity than other breeds. Some Goldendoodles do produce more shedding than other varieties, so it ultimately depends on the individual animal. If you are looking for a non-shedding pet, it is recommended to discuss this with the breeder and even the veterinarian to determine the shedding tendency of a particular Goldendoodle beforehand. Because Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed, there is a greater chance of finding one with reduced shedding.
Goldendoodles have specific dietary needs and it is important to make sure that they are getting the right nutrition for optimal health. A high-quality dog food should provide high-quality proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to your Goldendoodle. Additionally, there should be adequate supplements of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. To ensure proper nutrition, consider feeding your Goldendoodle a specialized diet for their age, size, and activity level as well as any health necessities that may be present. Treats can be fed in moderation and should always be balanced with nutritious meals.
Preparing for a new Goldendoodle can be an exciting and rewarding experience. First and foremost, it's important to make sure that your home environment is safe and secure. That means childproofing, getting a quality pet gate, and checking to make sure your yard is secure where he or she can safely run and play. Second, stock up on the necessary pet supplies including a crate, toys, food and water bowls, and a bed. Thirdly, it's a good idea to brush up on standard obedience commands with a reputable trainer or through a book or video.
Goldendoodles vary greatly in size depending on the parents used to produce the Goldendoodle pup. Generally speaking, standard Goldendoodles can weigh anywhere between 40-45 pounds as adults and reach a height of 21-24 inches at the shoulder. Miniature and medium Goldendoodles are typically smaller and weigh between 15-35 pounds at adulthood. While not considered “large” dogs, they are considered an average sized breed and are generally considered “bigger than the average small dog” by many.
Absolutely! Goldendoodles are generally very active dogs, making them an ideal breed for outdoor activities with their owners. They have an enthusiasm to please, so they often learn to follow commands quickly and easily. Goldendoodles have a cheerful, outgoing temperament which can result in endearing behaviors such as taking the initiative to play fetch with the ball or stick you toss for them. Also, many Goldendoodle owners find that their pets have a wonderfully gentle demeanor and are quite lovable.
Goldendoodles can make great pets for first-time owners, depending on the person's lifestyle and needs. They are often intelligent and friendly, which makes them a suitable companion. Their size and coat type also make them a versatile breed since they don't require a lot of strenuous exercise and their coats require minimal grooming. Having said that, Goldendoodles can still benefit from daily walks or playtime to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Additionally, they respond well to training and can quickly learn basic commands.
Generally, Goldendoodles require training sessions of at least 15 minutes per day. However, to maximize their full potential, it is best to aim for 45 – 60 minutes of active training per day. This can include basic commands such as 'sit', 'down', 'stay', 'leave it', and 'come'. For puppies, it is best to keep these sessions short and sweet – 15 minutes should do the trick. Additionally, set aside some time for fun and outdoor activities such as walks and play in the yard.
