Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a unique breed of dog, a hybrid of two other breeds: the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. With a combination of intelligence, loyalty and trainability from the Golden Retriever and non-shedding, hypoallergenic coat and other desirable traits from the Poodle, Goldendoodles are highly sought-after animals. Goldendoodles come in three main sizes: small, medium and large, with each size having various sub-types.
Goldendoodles are considered hypoallergenic due to the poodle in their hybrid makeup. While no dog is 100% allergen-proof, Goldendoodles may be less likely to cause an allergic reaction due to their hybrid coat. That being said, some Goldendoodles may cause allergic reactions due to their fur or dander. It is best to consult with your allergist if you have specific concerns about potential allergy triggers.
Goldendoodles typically eat the same kinds of food that Golden Retrievers do: a high-quality, nutritionally balanced dry dog food. The amount that should be fed depends on size, age, activity level, and other factors, so it is best to consult with a veterinarian for specific dietary advice. For example, puppies might need to be fed more often with smaller meals and older dogs might need to eat less often with meals that are adjusted based on their activity levels.
Prior to bringing your new Goldendoodle home, it's important to ensure that your home is adequately prepared. Start by making sure that areas where your puppy will spend time, such as his sleeping area, play area, and confined area (such as a puppy playpen) are all puppy-proof; remove breakable objects, cover electrical cords, and make sure small items like pet toys are out of reach. Next, provide your Goldendoodle with his own bed or crate and blankets or towels to lay on.
Goldendoodles typically come in three size varieties: standard, medium, and miniature. Standard doodles have a mature weight between 45 and 90 pounds and be between 21-24 inches tall. Medium doodles weigh between 20-50 pounds and reach a height of 17-21 inches. Miniature doodles weigh around 10-20 pounds and can reach a height of 10-17 inches. All size varieties of Goldendoodles have the same lovable personality, just in smaller or bigger packages!
The amount of time you should spend walking your Goldendoodle each day will depend on the age, size, and activity level of your pet. A general rule of thumb is to allow at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Depending on your pup's needs, that may mean a brisk walk around the block or an hour-long game of fetch. As your Goldendoodle matures, be sure to up the amount of time spent exercising, as this will help maintain their health and keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
Goldendoodles are generally known for their friendly and obedient nature, making them a wonderful pet for families with children. In addition to having a gentle demeanor, they are highly social and enjoy the companionship of others, particularly children who can play with them and give them lots of attention. Goldendoodles are also known for being people pleasers, so with proper guidance, they can be taught how to behave around children. Moreover, due to their intelligence and loyalty, they can develop strong bonds with family members of all ages.
The amount of time required to train Goldendoodles depends on a variety of factors, such as the age and temperament of the dog, the level of training you are aiming for, and the amount of time you can commit to training each day. Generally, it is recommended to allocate at least 30 minutes a day to practice certain behaviors. This time should be dedicated to reinforcing positive behaviors and building a strong bond between you and your pup.
