Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are one of the most popular designer dog breeds of the modern day. Not only are they incredibly cute, but they are also incredibly intelligent and loyal. Goldendoodles are a hybrid mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and as a result, they are highly agile and obedient. They are fiercely devoted to their owners and will quickly become an integral part of the family. In addition to being active and loving companions, Goldendoodles are very easy to maintain and look after.
Goldendoodles are typically known for their low shedding tendencies and an impressive coat type. While they won't be completely non-shedding like a poodle, they can produce minimal shedding compared to many other breeds. An important factor that influences the shedding of a Goldendoodle is its coat type. A Goldendoodle can have a straight or curly coat depending on each individual, meaning the amount of shedding can vary somewhat. On the flipside, the curls on a Goldendoodle can also help to collect any loose hairs, thus reducing the amount of shedding.
Goldendoodles can require different dietary needs than other breeds. While generally considered healthy, Goldendoodles can develop allergies and health issues like hip dysplasia, which require specialized nutrition. Therefore, it is important to consult with your veterinarian to discuss a well-balanced diet that meets the particular needs of your Goldendoodle. When looking for a high-quality diet for your pup, it is important to consider the food's source of ingredients, probiotics, antioxidants, quality proteins, and carbohydrates.
Preparing to welcome a Goldendoodle into your home should begin well before it arrives! Start first by researching the breed so you understand the characteristics and needs of a Goldendoodle. Next, make sure you have the necessary supplies and equipment ready before its arrival such as a food and water bowl, a bed, a crate, grooming supplies, toys, and once it arrives a collar and leash. Then you can secure any necessary veterinary appointments for vaccinations and any other health treatments.
Goldendoodles come in a range of sizes with the most common size being medium. Depending on the parents, they can range anywhere from 20-30 lbs and about 10-15 inches tall at the shoulder, to over 100 lbs and up to 24-26 inches tall at the shoulder. Toy and mini Goldendoodles will be much smaller than the medium sized, ranging from 10-24 lbs and 8-15 inches, whereas the standard Goldendoodles will fall into the larger weight range of 30-100 lbs.
Generally speaking, you should plan to take your Goldendoodle for a leisurely walk at least twice a day for around 20 to 30 minutes each time. Short, light walks throughout the day are also helpful and allow your dog to move around and relieve themselves. Additionally, it is important to give them a chance to explore and engage in some vigorous activity for mental stimulation. It is recommended to rotate activities, such as lengths of the walk, environments, and methods (like a game of fetch) as a way to keep them mentally and physically healthy.
Goldendoodles are known for being patient, loving, playful, and intelligent. They make wonderful family pets and are very good with children. As a cross between the Poodle and the Golden Retriever, the Goldendoodle naturally inherits many of the best traits of both breeds, such as being gentle, loving, and friendly. Goldendoodles are typically very patient and can often learn quickly how to interact safely with children. They become protective, loyal friends to the youngest family members and have a tendency to provide significant comfort during stressful times.
The amount of exercise that Goldendoodles need each day varies, depending on their age, energy level, and health. Generally speaking, adult Goldendoodles need 30-60 minutes a day of moderate exercise, such as playing fetch, going for a walk, or running around in a large backyard. Goldendoodles who are younger or have more energy may need closer to 60 minutes of exercise. Of course, any type of exercise should be balanced with plenty of breaks throughout the day for rest and relaxation.
