Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles combine the intelligence and energy of a Poodle with the loyal, affectionate nature of a Golden Retriever. This popular designer breed is a great companion for many households. Goldendoodles usually reach between 45 and 90 pounds and need frequent grooming to stay mat-free and healthy. They are also highly active, and need regular exercise daily. They are highly trainable with their intelligence, so it is important to provide consistent training to ensure your companion behaves well.
The Goldendoodle coat can vary depending on the mix of parent breeds. Generally, they have a soft, wavy, and lowto non-shedding coat of fur, which can range in color and texture. The coat can range from cut and clipped to curlier and longer, depending on the parent breeds. On average, Goldendoodle coats require weekly brushing, regular baths, and occasional trimming to keep them looking their best. Due to their hypoallergenic nature, many owners are attracted to Goldendoodles for their minimal shedding and easy-care coats.
Goldendoodles are intelligent, energetic, and curious dogs that deserve a healthy diet to support their lifestyle. That being said, it's important to know what not to feed your Goldendoodle so that they can stay healthy. As with all dogs, Goldendoodles should never be given chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, caffeine, or anything that contains xylitol. Additionally, they should not be given uncooked bones that are small or round as these can be a chocking hazard. Lastly, large amounts of fatty treats should be avoided to prevent pancreatitis and obesity.
Whether you’re taking in a rescued adult Goldendoodle or bringing home a puppy, there are some important things to consider. Before bringing your dog home, make sure you have the large and small items that will help keep it healthy and secure. Start by setting up a good-sized area in your home with a leash, collar, food bowl and bed. Depending on the size dog you’re getting, you may want to invest in a sturdy wire kennel. Also consider some toys and treats to encourage fun and bonding time.
Goldendoodles can vary in size depending on the purpose of the breeding and its parents' size. Generally speaking, Goldendoodles are a medium-size mixed breed, ranging from 20-40 pounds and 15-24 inches tall. Standard Goldendoodles, bred with a large-size poodle, typically weigh around 45-90 pounds, while miniature Goldendoodles, bred with a small-size poodle, usually weigh 15-30 pounds.
It is recommended that Goldendoodle owners plan for at least 30 minutes a day of exercise and activity, including walking. During these activities, owners should aim to provide at least 15 minutes of structured walking where the Goldendoodle is following commands such as heel, swapping directions and stopping, as this helps to reinforce the bond between pet and person. In addition, owners should also provide play, cuddles, and interactive toys for the remainder of the time, to keep the Goldendoodle mentally and physically stimulated.
Goldendoodles can make great family dogs, depending on the individual dog's personality and lifestyle needs. Generally, Goldendoodles have a pleasing nature coupled with a calm demeanor and trustworthy intelligence, which can make them an ideal fit for many families. They tend to have an outgoing, friendly personality, and they can be incredibly loyal and affectionate companions. Goldendoodles are also great family dogs because they are very intelligent and can learn commands quickly. They also require active play and exercise which can be fun and rewarding for the whole family to enjoy.
It really depends on how old the Goldendoodle is, how much energy the pup has, and what type of training you are doing. Generally, young pups will need to be trained for at least 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day. Once a routine is established, then it is recommended to do longer, 30 minute sessions daily. If the pup is already older and potty trained, then shorter 10 minute training sessions throughout the day are recommended.
