Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a cross-breed of golden retrievers and poodles and are characterized by their curly/wavy coats. They are considered to be a designer breed and are a favorite for people looking for hypoallergenic dogs. Goldendoodles are very intelligent and can learn commands quickly. They are also known for their friendly and easy-going attitudes. Goldendoodles tend to have a good amount of energy and love to play. They are known to be very friendly with strangers and do not generally require lots of barking.
The Goldendoodle coat is a wonderfully soft and unique combination of both its parents' coats. It can range from a looser, curlier Poodle-like coat, to a tighter, wavier Golden Retriever-like coat. Goldendoodle coats also come in an array of colors including golden, apricot, cream, brown, red, black, and even a mix of colors. They tend to be short to medium length depending on their generation and parents.
Goldendoodles are very sensitive to certain foods and it's important to know what not to feed them. Although Goldendoodles can often eat the same things as humans, there are some types of food that can cause stomach problems or even be poisonous to the breed. To ensure the health of your Goldendoodle, it's recommended to do your research and ask your vet for advice about what you should and shouldn't feed to the dog. An exhaustive list of what not to feed can usually be found on breed-specific websites, as well as advice on portion sizes and suitable treats.
Goldendoodles can often require more grooming and brushing than other dogs, due to their longer coat. Depending on the age of the Goldendoodle, a nutrient-rich diet, regular exercise, and quality veterinary care may also be key requirements to ensure that your Goldendoodle remains healthy. Goldendoodles, like all breeds, may also need training and socialization to ensure that they become well-rounded, confident, and obedient. It's important to remember that consistency is key when it comes to training and disciplining Goldendoodles in order to achieve positive results.
While Goldendoodles can range in size due to their cross-breeding with both Golden Retrievers and Poodles, they are generally considered a medium-sized dog breed. Although they are often smaller than Golden Retrievers, they are not as small as breeds such as Maltese, Chihuahuas, and Yorkshire Terriers. Some Goldendoodles may reach upwards of 22” in height and over 45 lbs, while others bred through generations of pure Goldendoodles may stay smaller, reaching an average of 14” in height and 30 lbs.
Walking your Goldendoodle daily is an important part of maintaining its health and happiness. How much walking your pup needs will depend on its age, breed, size, and general health. Generally, for an adult Goldendoodle, a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day is recommended. That 30 minutes of activity can be broken up into several smaller walks if needed, or it can be a longer, more leisurely 1-hour walk. You may choose to increase the amount of exercise to as much as 90 minutes or more each day to provide more vigorous exercise for your pup.
Goldendoodles are known to be great family dogs! They are smart, easy-to-train, social dogs that thrive on human interaction. With their high energy and love of activity, they make a great companion for a family. They love to learn, and will happily and quickly figure out how to do nearly anything their owners ask of them. Goldendoodles are also good with children and other animals, so they take the stress out of introducing them to new pets or introducing a new pet to other family members.
Training a Goldendoodle can be relatively easy if you have the right approach. Goldendoodles are smart and eager to please their owners, so by providing positive reinforcement and consistency, you will set the rules and build a strong relationship with your pup. Treats, toys, and verbal praise are all useful tools when teaching your pet to respond to commands. It also helps to break down lessons and training sessions into short, manageable sections, and mix between play breaks and repetition. Consistency and patience are key in training any breed of dog.
