Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are considered a hybrid breed that consists of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. This designer breed is characterized by its intelligence, good-natured personality, and low-shedding hypoallergenic coat which makes them an ideal family pet. Their size is usually medium to large, ranging anywhere from 30 to 100 pounds depending on the parent breeds. Goldendoodles require lots of exercise and playtime in order for them to be properly socialized and behaviorally healthy.
Goldendoodles are not hypoallergenic. Some characteristics of a hypoallergenic dog include a short coat, non-shedding fur, and a reduced risk of triggering an allergy. While Goldendoodles may have some of these characteristics, they are not true hypoallergenic breeds. However, certain Goldendoodle generations are sometimes referred to as "low-allergen" doodles due to their reduced shedding and risk of triggering allergies.
Goldendoodles are highly-regarded as one of the most active and intelligent breeds, and as such, they need a very specific type of diet. High-quality, nutritionally balanced dry food is the best way to ensure that your Goldendoodle is getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Ideally, this should be a high-protein product with little to no filler grains, such as corn, wheat, or soywhich can be hard to digest.
Before you bring home a Goldendoodle, you should make sure you have the necessary items to keep your pup healthy and happy. Some of the essentials you should pick up include a large comfy bed, a few chew toys that are safe and durable, a collar and leash, high-quality food recommended by your vet, treats, grooming supplies such as shampoo and brushes, a place to store clean water for your pup, and waste cleanup supplies. Having these items ready can help make your pup's transition into your home smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your pup!
Goldendoodles are generally considered large dogs, depending on their parents' breeds and subsequent generations. They are often bred from a standard or miniature Poodle and a Golden Retriever, which are both traditionally considered moderately-to-large-sized breeds. With the designer breed characteristics of the Goldendoodle typically being half Golden Retriever and half Poodle, they tend to be significantly larger than their Poodle parent. As a result, adults typically range from 40 to 90 pounds, making them moderate to large-sized and their coat may be wavy, straight, or curl.
Yes, you can take your Goldendoodle running. It is important to make sure that they are in good physical condition before you do so. Make sure that they are getting regular exercise, are eating a balanced diet, and are in good health. Be aware that because they are an active breed, they will need long runs and/or walks to help them keep in shape. As with any activity, make sure to provide plenty of breaks during the course of the run and make sure to take the temperature of the place you are running in into account.
Goldendoodles are great family pets, especially when it comes to kids. They are typically gentle, friendly, and loving dogs, and many typically bond quickly with kids of all ages. While Goldendoodles may require some training to ensure good behavior, they are usually very patient and have an incredibly sweet nature when it comes to interacting with children. In addition, Goldendoodles tend to be protective of children, often watching over them like a guardian. With that said, always supervise children when they are interacting with any breed of dog, including Goldendoodles.
Training a Goldendoodle requires much patience and dedication, but how much time a day you need to set aside depends largely on your individual situation. Generally, the more time you can commit to training your Goldendoodle, the better-most trainers recommend that you at least spend an hour each day reinforcing good behaviors and teaching new commands. However, even if you can only devote twenty to thirty minutes a day to training, it is still possible to make considerable progress.
