Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. They are energetic, intelligent, and highly trainable dogs that make wonderful companions. Goldendoodles usually have a friendly and outgoing personality and can be great with children and other family pets. They typically have a soft, curly coat that requires regular brushing and grooming to maintain. Depending on the type of Poodle used in the crossbreed, Goldendoodles can come in various sizes, and their coats can range from short and wiry to soft and curly.
Goldendoodles are often referred to as "hypoallergenic" due to their low-shedding coats, however this isn't entirely accurate. While their coats can be considered low-shedding or lower-allergen due to the poodle cross in them, there is still potential for people with allergies to show a reaction to their wash-and-wear coats. The better term to use for these unique pups would be "low-shedding". Goldendoodles still require regular care and upkeep and specific grooming needs in order to look and feel their best.
Consulting with a veterinarian is an important first step to ensure that the foods you give to your Goldendoodle are safe. Additionally, there are a few rules of thumb that can help you determine whether a food is suitable for your pup. Avoid any food that is high in fat or sugar, contains artificial preservatives or coloring agents, or that is labeled as “for human consumption” only. Many foods that are safe for humans can be harmful or even toxic to animals.
Goldendoodles can be great family dogs, but they do require special attention to thrive. They need daily exercise, a consistent daily routine, and plenty of human interaction. Without these things, they can become hyperactive and destructive, so regular walks with their owners, interactive play with fun toys, and time spent bonding with their owners is key to a happy and healthy Goldendoodle. Additionally, they will need regular grooming to maintain their coat; professional grooming is recommended every six to eight weeks, as well as regular brushing and tooth brushing.
Goldendoodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from little Tiny Goldendoodles at 4-7 pounds to the larger Standard Goldendoodles at 45-100 pounds. The most common size of Goldendoodle is the Mini Goldendoodle, weighing in between 15-20 pounds. Micro Mini Goldendoodles weigh between 4-9 pounds and the Maxi Goldendoodles, the largest variety, weigh between 45-100 pounds. The size of a Goldendoodle depends on a variety of factors such as breeding size, generation, and the size of the litter.
Goldendoodles certainly can have active personalities! They are the result of a crossbreed between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, two active breeds. Goldendoodles are incredibly intelligent and exceptionally versatile—they require moderate daily exercise and love interacting with their owners. Because of their hybrid athleticism, Goldendoodles are excellent candidates for a wide variety of different activities, such as running in the park, swimming, dog sports, and obedience training.
Goldendoodles are an exceptionally friendly breed that tend to be great with kids. They have a gentle, yet playful temperament, which makes them an ideal companion for children who need to experience unconditional love and acceptance. With proper socialization and training, Goldendoodles can become terrific playmates for children and are sure to show them the same amount of kindness and love that they show to their other family members. Not to mention, their hypoallergenic coat makes them a great plus for families with sensitive children.
Training your Goldendoodle can be a rewarding experience with dedication and consistency. One approach is to make use of positive reinforcement methods such as treats, praises, and rewards. Start by teaching simple commands such as sit and stay and build up from there. Initially use a fully concentrated and focused session of 10-15 minutes each day. Once your Goldendoodle masters several commands, you can increase the duration and intensity of the sessions. Additionally, it is important to set some house rules and create a routine for your Goldendoodle. Be consistent in enforcing these rules and reinforce good behavior.
