Questions & Answers
A Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed that is a combination of two different breeds a Golden Retriever and a Poodle and one of the most popular designer dogs out there today. They come in a variety of sizes, ranging from the smaller Mini Goldendoodle to the larger Standard Goldendoodle, and are known for their wonderful hybrid vigour and lifelong companionship with their owners. Goldendoodles are generally loving, intelligent, and eager to please, making them good family pets, especially for people with allergies as they tend to shed less.
The Goldendoodle coat can vary in length, color, and composition. Depending on their lineage, Goldendoodle coats can range from curly, corded, and wavy. Their coat colors traditionally are golden, red, black, cream, and sometimes with white markings. Goldendoodle coats are usually softer than purebred Golden Retrievers, due to the addition of the Poodle line. The coat can become matted, so many Goldendoodle owners opt to keep the fur clipped short.
Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, active dogs that need a diet appropriate for their lifestyle. Certain types of food and treats can be harmful to Goldendoodles and it's important to know what not to feed them. To ensure your Goldendoodle is getting the best possible diet, be sure to avoid foods that are high in fat and sugar, baker's chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, garlic, onions, and chives.
Before bringing home your new Goldendoodle, it is important to take certain steps to make sure your home is prepared and that the transition for your new pup is as smooth as possible. Start by puppy proofing your home by blocking off restricted areas, like bedrooms and hazardous areas that may contain choking hazards or cleaning supplies. Also, have important items like food and water dishes, a dog bed, and toys ready for your pup when they arrive. Additionally, look into essential items such as a secure and comfortable leash and collar, and appropriate grooming supplies.
Goldendoodles are hybrids of the popular Golden Retriever and Poodle breeds and can range in size from small to large. While adult Goldendoodle sizes can range from small to extra large, most Goldendoodles fall into the large-sized category; typically spanning between 50 and 90 pounds when fully grown. Generally speaking, most Goldendoodles would be considered big dogs given their size. Additionally, they tend to be active and require plenty of room and outdoor exercise, like other large-breed dogs.
The recommended amount of daily exercise for a Goldendoodle varies depending on the particular age, breed, and size of your individual pup. Generally, a Goldendoodle should get at least an hour of exercise daily by walking, running, playing fetch, or any other type of physical activity. Walking is an excellent form of exercise, and your Goldendoodle should get about 30 minutes of walking per day. This can be divided into three 10-minute sessions or two 15-minute sessions.
Goldendoodles, generally speaking, are a very friendly and social breed of dog, and as such their personalities really lend themselves to getting along with kids. Popular for being great family pets, Goldendoodles can provide years of companionship and fun for adults and children alike. Thanks to their gentle demeanor, they often make wonderful playmates. Being intelligent, they also learn commands easily and will even remember instructions from multiple family members.
Training your Goldendoodle requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start by teaching your pup basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Using treats or toys as rewards can help reinforce these commands. It is also important to consistently provide stimulation through activities such as going for walks or playing fetch. Establish boundaries with your Goldendoodle by discouraging behaviors like barking, jumping, and biting. A clear understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors can be established through repetition and consistency. Regularly scheduled training sessions can also help strengthen the bond between you and your pup.
