Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed that was developed by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Goldendoodles are exceptionally smart and highly trainable. They make excellent family pets, as they are incredibly loyal, loving, and affectionate. An interesting fact about Goldendoodles is that their fur can vary from barely wavy to curly. Their coat can also come in a variety of colors, from white to black, to red and gold. Another fun fact about Goldendoodles is that they are very social creatures.
Goldendoodles are often mistaken as non-shedding dogs due to a common misunderstanding that their curly coats do not shed. While Goldendoodles do typically have less shedding than other breeds due to their hybrid nature, they generally are not considered to be completely non-shedding. In truth, Goldendoodle coats vary from dog to dog, but all do shed some amount of hair over time. While low shedding does make Goldendoodles attractive to those with allergies, it is important to note that there is no guarantee that any hybrid breed will be completely non-shedding.
Goldendoodles may have special dietary needs due to potential genetic predispositions. Depending on the size, breed composition, and activity level of the individual Goldendoodle, an appropriate diet tailored to the specific pup will help ensure the best possible health. For pups with solid coats (Compositionally more Poodle than Golden Retriever), high-protein and grain-free diets are especially recommended as they are easily digestible and create less buildup in the coat and skin.
Preparing for your new Goldendoodle is an exciting but slightly daunting endeavour! To start with, you'll want to make sure your home is properly puppy-proofed. Set up a safe puppy-proof area with everything they might need like toys, food, potty mats, bedding, and a few positive distraction items like chews and treats. Secondly, make sure you have all the necessary supplies for your new pup, such as a collar with ID tags, harness, leash, food and water bowls, grooming supplies, and waste bags.
Goldendoodles are a mix of two different breeds, a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and their size can vary greatly depending on the specific mix of genetics. Generally, Goldendoodle puppies will be somewhere between 45 and 100 lbs and can be anywhere from 14 inches to 24 inches tall at the shoulder. The only way to accurately forecast size is to estimate based on the size of the pup's parents, as well as reviewing growth charts. Ultimately, Goldendoodles can come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes depending on the exact mix of their parent breeds.
As with any breed of dog, there is no definitive answer to how many minutes a day you should walk your Goldendoodle. Generally speaking, however, an adult Goldendoodle needs at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This increases to around an hour per day for a puppy. Remember, too, that walks are only one way of exercising your pup. Activity time can also include running, playing, and structured training.
Goldendoodles are known to be one of the friendliest breeds of dogs and, in general, they get along well with kids. They're incredibly loving and have an inherent desire to please, making them an ideal companion for children of all ages. Since Goldendoodles have a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle, they tend to possess traits of both, like loyalty, intelligence, and playfulness, which make them especially kid-friendly.
Training a Goldendoodle requires consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. Ideally, begin training your dog as soon as you bring him home. Early socialization and training will ensure he grows up to be a well-mannered pup. Start with basic obedience commands like sit, stay, and come when called. Introduce each command slowly and with positive reinforcement, such as treats and verbal praise. It's important to remain patient and eliminate any negative reinforcement if he is not responding as expected. Gradually increase the difficulty of commands as he becomes more comfortable with the routine.
