Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are definitely one of the more interesting breeds of dogs. They are a hybrid cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, creating an incredibly smart and playful pup. Goldendoodles have the the intelligence of a poodle, along with the athleticism and sociability of the Golden Retriever, making them wonderful family pets. They are also considered hypoallergenic because of their low-shedding hair, making them perfect for those with allergies. Goldendoodles are incredibly devoted and loyal dogs, and they love to be family companions.
Managing allergies with Goldendoodles is not an exact science, but there are things you can do to minimize exposure to potential allergens. Keeping your house clean and free of excess hair, dander, and dust is important. Vacuuming often and mopping with a damp cloth can help cut back on these allergens. If the Goldendoodle is outdoors more than coming in the house, trimming its fur regularly will help reduce dander levels. Regularly brushing and bathing your Goldendoodle will also help reduce allergens by removing excess dander and oils.
Feeding your Goldendoodle should be tailored to their individual needs including their age, activity level and health issues. Goldendoodles are a mix of the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle, so their diet should reflect both breeds. Quality dry kibble should form the basis of their diet which should be supplemented with fresh ingredients such as vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. Adult Goldendoodles will need up to 1.5 to 2.5 cups of food a day, divided into two meals.
Preparing for a Goldendoodle requires lots of research and planning. Start by investigating the breed to understand your pup, including any possible genetic health issues, grooming requirements, temperament, and training needs. Additionally, you will need to purchase some basic items such as a collar, leash, and pet bed. As Goldendoodles are a working breed, they will need plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation, so you should also plan to provide daily walks and create a variety of interesting and engaging activities. You'll also want to arrange for a vet visit for a check-up and initial vaccinations.
The size of your Goldendoodle puppy will depend on their genetic background and could range from about 20-30 pounds or more. Obviously, this size estimation will change as they get older and their full size will become more clear at maturity. Typically, Goldendoodles have long coats and big, floppy ears. It's impossible to predict the exact size they will reach as adults, but your pup will likely fall within the "standard" range of a Goldendoodle, which is anywhere between 33 to 70 pounds.
Goldendoodles are particularly active dogs that require ample exercise and stimulation. Being hybrids of the Poodle and Golden Retriever, Goldendoodles naturally desire interaction and mental stimulation. They often need to be kept occupied, or else they can become destructive due to boredom. A Goldendoodle's activity levels will depend on the size of the dog, the individual dog's metabolism, and the environment. While occasional walks and playtime in the backyard are good enough for some dogs, other Goldendoodles would benefit from more rigorous exercise, such as jogging or playing fetch.
Goldendoodles make excellent family dogs because of their friendly, patient, and loyal personalities. Highly intelligent and low-shedding, they bond with all members of the family, and will always be ready for a game or a walk outside. Goldendoodles also have a strong desire to please, making them easy to train and turning them into great family pets. They have a wonderful sense of humor and love to show off. Plus, they are big cuddlers and tend to make themselves at home wherever they may be.
Every Goldendoodle will require a different amount of exercise per day; as a general guideline, most Goldendoodles will need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. If feasible, it’s best to take your Goldendoodle on two 15 minute walks each day; if one longer walk isn’t possible, then try to break up the physical activity into more sessions with shorter walking distances. Also, try to offer your Goldendoodle mentally stimulating activities such as agility or simple obedience exercises.
