Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are beloved designer dogs that come from an equal combination of two very different breeds: Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Though they must not be confused with Labradoodles, which are bred with Labradors, Goldendoodles are known for being intelligent, loyal, friendly, and low-shedding. On the fun side, these pups are wonderful family dogs which come in a variety of colors and sizes from toy, miniature, and standard and they have a lifetime of approximately 10-15 years.
Managing allergies with Goldendoodles involves taking specific steps to reduce symptoms. Allergy sufferers should talk to their doctor to determine the exact steps needed to manage their allergies, which may include avoiding certain triggers, such as dander, saliva, urine, and other substances the dog may produce. To manage allergies, it is important to bathe the dog regularly, groom them frequently, and vacuum often to keep allergens to a minimum. Additionally, dusting, wiping down surfaces, and keeping pets off the furniture can help reduce allergens in the home.
Goldendoodles typically eat a diet of high-quality dog food formulated for their size and age. An adult Goldendoodle would have very different dietary needs than a pup. Generally, Goldendoodles should receive two meals per day with each portion amounting to 1/4 to 1/2 cup of kibble, depending on size. It's important to tailor the food to the size of the dog. Experts suggest to feed both wet and dry foods to ensure optimum health and nutrition. It also helps to include fresh vegetables in your Goldendoodle's diet.
To prepare your home for your new Goldendoodle, there are a few key steps you should take. Before bringing your pup home, invest in some quality dog toys as well as a chew toy to satisfy your pup's need to chew. Additionally, create a comfortable space where your pup can relax in your home. Make sure to stock up on supplies like food, water dishes, collars, leashes, and bedding. You should also ensure that any cords, wires, and fragile items are out of reach to prevent any potential accidents.
Goldendoodles can vary in sizes depending on their genetic makeup. Generally, Miniature and Toy Goldendoodles tend to be smaller and weigh between 10-25 lbs when fully grown. Standard Goldendoodles, bred to be a larger size, are typically 17 – 24 inches tall at the shoulder, and weigh between 40 and 55 lbs. Giant Goldendoodles, which are a hybrid of a Standard Poodle and a Great Dane, weigh in at 90-100 lbs.
The amount of time you should walk your Goldendoodle depends on their age, size, and overall health. For a healthy, mature Goldendoodle, it is recommended that they take a minimum of two, 15-minute walks each day. Puppies should have several, shorter walks throughout the day starting around 5 minutes and increasing gradually as they get older. If the Goldendoodle is overweight or has joint pain, the walks should be adjusted accordingly; in this case, shorter walks with more frequent breaks may be beneficial.
Goldendoodles can make excellent companions for children, as they are often very loving and gentle. Goldendoodles are often affectionate and gentle with children, and they tend to have a friendly, outgoing personality. Other character traits that make them great with kids include being intelligent, obedient, and eager to please. As long as training and socialization begin early, Goldendoodles typically get along well with kids. They can provide hours of joy and love to both adults and children.
Goldendoodles are among the most intelligent breeds of dog. They are considered to be very smart due to their mix of two smart breeds: the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. With their two intelligent parents, Goldendoodles surpass basic obedience training with ease and can quickly adjust to new situations making them reliable working animals. Not only are they smart when trained, but they are quite skillful when given the chance to exercise their natural intelligence, often performing complex tasks and reacting to verbal, physical, and contextual cues.
