Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed of dog, bred from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They are classified as a small to medium-sized dog, with males typically weighing between 40 and 65 pounds and females 35 to 55 pounds. Goldendoodles come in a variety of coat types and colors, including curly, wavy, and straight. Their coats can range from white to cream to black, sometimes with flecks of grey, red, or other hues.
The Goldendoodle coat is a combination of the soft, curly-wavy fur of the Poodle and the luxuriant, wavy coat of the Golden Retriever. Generally, the coat is slightly wavy or curly and is of medium length. It can even feel slightly wiry at times. However, it is still much softer than most other wiry breeds. The coat typically sheds a low-to-moderate amount of fur, making it an ideal choice for people with allergies.
Goldendoodles are highly intelligent dogs that require a diet of quality food and nutrition to stay healthy and active. A good diet for your Goldendoodle should contain a combination of wet and dry food, or even homemade meals. Wet food is beneficial for puppies and older Goldendoodles as it contains more moisture. Dry food, on the other hand, is great for maintaining dental health and provides a balanced daily diet. Meat is a great source of protein for Goldendoodles of any age, and can be served either raw or cooked, depending on your preference.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, there are a few essential items you should consider acquiring. First and foremost, get a few quality bowls for food and water, and make sure you use age-appropriate products. In addition, purchase a comfortable bed and a few toys for mental stimulation. Treats are also important for encouraging good behavior, so make sure to stock up on some healthy treats for your pup. Providing your Goldendoodle with a leash, collar and ID tags is also important for taking them out on walks and giving them a safe spot to venture outdoors.
Goldendoodles can vary in size greatly, depending on factors like the proportion of Poodle to Golden Retriever, and also whether the Poodle is a toy or standard size. Generally speaking, adult Goldendoodles will range from anywhere between 15 and 30 inches tall and weigh between 30 and 90 pounds. The smaller end of that range is for those with more Retriever genes, while the larger end is typical of those with a larger proportion of Poodle genes. They also tend to be proportionately longer than they are tall, most often resembling a Labrador in shape.
Goldendoodles can often be seen enjoying a dip in the water! This popular crossbreed, known for being incredibly social, intelligent, and energetic, enjoys swimming and is a strong swimmer. Goldendoodles do not only have the physical capacity to swim, but tend to enjoy the activity for mental stimulation and physical exercise. This is partly because they often have low-shedding coats that don't retain as much moisture. Moreover, swimming can provide beneficial exercise for Goldendoodles while providing an outlet for pent-up energy.
Goldendoodles are typically very good with children, provided they receive proper socialization and exercise. Goldendoodles have gentle dispositions and are eager to please, making them loyal and devoted companions to children. They have a higher-than-average tolerance for rough-housing from children, meaning they can handle being pulled, pushed, and generally being played with. Goldendoodles are social dogs and need to be around people, so having close family members to play with them is an ideal situation.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training a Goldendoodle will vary depending on the dog's temperament and age. Generally speaking, it is recommended to spend at least 15-20 minutes each day, 2-3 days a week on basic obedience training. If you are looking to do more advanced training, then you should plan on more time each day. You might include an additional 20 minutes each day to work on more advanced behaviors such as heeling, sitting, and lying down.
