Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, toy-sized dog breed that is known for its luxurious and silky white fur and intelligent, alert temperament. They're incredibly friendly and sociable and make great famiy companions. They are part of the Bichon dog family and are sometimes referred to as Bichon Havanese, Havanese Bichon, Cuban Silk Dogs, or Havana Silk Dogs.
The Havanese have a beautiful, medium-length, silky coat that is wavy to curly. Their coat is a double coat that is made up of a soft, dense undercoat and a longer, smoother topcoat that has natural highlights. It can vary from wavy to curly and is usually teddy bear shaped around the face and legs. The texture is very soft and silky to the touch. The coat comes in a variety of beautiful colors including white, cream, sable, tan, gray, chocolate, and black, and can sometimes have a particular color pattern.
Havaneses typically have a diet that is rich in fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their meals can consist of lean meats, poultry, fish, and dairy, as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables. Whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds can also be included in their balanced plates. Consistent treats such as treats that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids like raw fish, eggs, and vegetables are also a favorite among many Havaneses.
Before bringing home a new Havanese, it is important to make sure your home is prepared for the transition. Have items such as food and water bowls, necessary grooming tools, toys, and a bed or crate ready. Make sure the home is puppy-proofed by moving any hazardous items or items with small or easy to swallow pieces out of reach. Create a designated area in the home for your pup to do their business, and it is best to stick to that spot.
Havaneses typically reach a maximum height of 9-10 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 7-13 pounds. On average, female Havaneses will be larger than their male counterparts. While size varies depending on the genetics of the individual, Havaneses generally remain a very compact breed, best known for their permanent puppy-like nature and for their unending loyalty. They are considered a toy breed and have the longest life expectancy among purebred dogs, with many living to 15 years or more.
Havaneses are an active breed of dog. Generally, they need about an hour of exercise a day, split between two or three walks. Playtime and outdoor activities are also beneficial and can be just as fulfilling as a walk. Havaneses can benefit from mental stimulation as well as physical exercise, so games of fetch, hide-and-seek and tug-of-war are also a great way to stimulate their bodies and minds. Swimming is another activity the breed sometimes enjoys.
Absolutely! Havaneses are smart, loyal, and affectionate, making them excellent companion dogs. They form strong bonds with their human families and can live happily in a family environment. They are good with older children, although it is recommended to keep them away from small children who may not understand their needs. They are also typically good with other pets if they have been socialized properly. Despite their small size, Havaneses have strong personalities and love to be involved in family activities.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training a Havanese on a daily basis varies depending on the dog's age, the difficulty of the task and how quickly the dog is learning. Generally speaking, however, 15 to 30 minutes of focused, positive reinforcement training per day is generally sufficient. As the pup learns, the amount of time can increase, as you start introducing more complex activities like agility. Just remember that when it comes to training, quality beats quantity and that short, frequent training sessions will be more beneficial than trying to cram too much into a single session.
