Questions & Answers
Well, Havaneses are known for being incredibly intelligent and affectionate companion dogs. They are also incredibly unique and interesting due to their mischievous personalities and active natures. Their squish face and silky coats make them irresistibly cute and cuddly, too! Plus, what makes Havaneses even more special is their unique build that makes them much lighter and graceful in comparison to other companion breeds. Even though they have been bred to be companion dogs, their long and powerful legs allow them to have graceful and agile movements.
The Havanese coat is soft and long, with a natural wave that adds volume and body, and a delightfully shaggy appearance. Although there can be variations among individuals, the most common colors are white, cream, gray, and black, and they can often have tinges of gold, silver, or blue. Hair length varies but tends to just below the toes. The breed is considered hypoallergenic due to its lack of an undercoat. The coat is quite easy to groom, as it requires very little brushing and combing to maintain its natural full look.
Feeding a Havanese the wrong food can lead to serious health issues, so it is important to know what not to feed them. Most human foods are off limits, such as chocolate, apples, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and sweet foods, as these can all be toxic to Havaneses. Also avoid feeding your Havanese foods like pork, chicken, beef, turkey, sausage and fatty foods that could cause pancreatitis. Avocados, walnuts, and macadamia nuts should also be avoided, as they can also be toxic.
Before bringing home your new Havanese, it is essential to take the time to prepare. Start by gathering the necessary equipment like a collar, leash, crate, bedding, food, water bowl, toys, and grooming supplies. Also, create a schedule for routine activities such as exercise, play, and potty breaks. Additionally, you should research health issues, diets, and behavior to ensure your pup is healthy and happy. Consider enrolling in an obedience class and learning about proper socialization and introducing your Havanese to children, other pets, and strangers.
Yes, Havaneses are considered small dogs. Generally, they weigh around 7 to 12 pounds when fully grown, which makes them among the smaller sizes of dog breeds. Despite their small size, Havaneses are considered a toy breed and have an athletic build. They usually stand at about 9 to 10.5 inches tall, from the most their paws to the top of their heads. They're a relatively low-shedding breed and have a long, fluffy coat that is usually white in color, although they can also be found in a mix of black, brown, and cream colors.
An ideal amount of exercise for a Havanese would be approximately 30 minutes per day. This should be split up into several 10-minute walks. The main thing is to make sure your Havanese gets enough exercise and is healthy. It is not important to meet a certain goal of minutes per day but rather to have a strong and happy Havanese. Keep in mind that puppies need more exercise than adult dogs, so when it comes to your Havanese puppy you may have to increase the amount of time to 45-60 minutes per day.
Havaneses are known to be wonderful family dogs that can interact very well with both adults and children. They have an affectionate nature and love to play, making them great companions for kids. Havaneses are intelligent animals that can be trained easily, so they typically bond quickly with their owners and obey basic commands. In addition, they tend to have a gentle demeanor and are patient with children, so they're likely to do well in households with young children if given proper training. Therefore, Havaneses make excellent pets for households with children, as they provide loyal companionship and entertainment.
Training a Havanese does require patience, persistence, and consistency. With the proper approach and commitment to positive reinforcement techniques, training a Havanese can be made easier. The breed of Havanese is very intelligent and eager to please, which makes them well suited for many types of training. However, they can also be somewhat challenging to train due to their highly independent nature. Properly introducing rules and boundaries in the house, along with positive reinforcement rewards, can help to motivate your Havanese and boost their confidence.
