Questions & Answers
Havaneses are known for their playful and affectionate personalities. These dogs make great family pets and love to spend time with their owners. They are intelligent and highly trainable, which makes them great therapy or service dogs. When it comes to exercise, Havaneses enjoy moderate activity such as long walks or a play session in the yard. Grooming for Havaneses takes place on a weekly basis and includes brushing, bath and nail trimming.
The Havanese coat is a beautiful, luxurious double-coat that is silky, soft, and textured. It comes in multiple colors such as white, cream, gold, chocolate, and even parti-colors. The topcoat is slightly wavy or curly and the undercoat is soft and cushiony, giving a cushiony feel to the touch. The adult hair normally reaches between 5 and 8 inches in length, the most popular being around 6 inches. The hair doesn't matt easily due to its texture and the fact that it's gentle on the skin.
Feeding your Havaneses should be done with caution, as certain foods can pose a danger to their health. Avoid giving it table scraps, chocolates, candy, and foods with a lot of sugar or salt. Bones, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, caffeine, and alcohol should also be strictly avoided. Any food items high in fat, as well as raw foods, can cause pancreatitis in these small dogs.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, it is important to adequately prepare your home. Start by finding a comfortable and safe area for your pup to rest and sleep. While it is helpful to crate-train your Havanese, you should create a warm, welcoming environment with appropriate bedding and toys. Next, make sure to puppy-proof your house by removing any hazardous objects or poisonous plants. It is also important to provide opportunities for exercise, both indoors and outdoors, and to take note of any behavioral issues that may arise. Lastly, establish a routine for meals and other daily activities.
Generally, Havanese puppies are quite small, growing to be roughly 8-11 inches in height and between 7-13 pounds in weight. The exact size your puppy will reach is dependent on a few factors, such as its diet, level of exercise and parent breed size. Although the time frame for when the puppy will reach its full size varies, typically they reach their full size at 12-18 months of age.
Havaneses are an incredibly active breed that require both physical and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. A good rule of thumb is to ensure they're getting at least two hours of exercise per day split up into several shorter sessions. This can include a daily walk, trips to the park, and active play sessions with toys. Keep in mind, this doesn't include playtime throughout the day. Instead, this should be time specifically dedicated to exercise, and would also include hiking, swimming, or running with your Havaneses.
Absolutely! Havaneses make wonderful first-time ownership companions; they are an intelligent, loyal, and affectionate breed. They enjoy spending time with their owners and often develop a strong bond, making them a great option for those who are only just starting out. As a plus, Havaneses require very little exercise and don't need much space in order to be happy making them the perfect breed for city-dwellers who may not have an extensive outdoor area to take them for long walks in.
Havaneses are a breed that is known for their intelligence. They are very active and alert dogs, and they are very eager to learn new things. Not only do they have the ability to pick up commands quickly, but they also have a great deal of problem-solving skills. They are very sociable and eager to please, so when combined with their intelligence, it makes them great companions. They are also very patient and obedient, so training them can be easier than other breeds of the same intelligence.
