Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, long-haired dog of the Bichon family, originating in Cuba and considered by many to be the national dog of the country. With an outgoing and spunky personality, they are often referred to as Velcro dogs as they tend to bond closely to their families. As a breed they don't require much grooming, yet they are quite active and enjoy recreational activities such as agility and performance-type sports. They come in a wide variety of coat colors, and their moderate size makes them an ideal breed for apartment living.
Yes, Havaneses are considered to be a non-shedding breed. This means that the breed itself does not require regular brushing or de-shedding, as most of their fur is tightly curled and held close to the body. That being said, these fluffy little dogs do require regular grooming, such as bathing, nail trimming, and occasional brushing. Training and socialization is also recommended for these clever canines, as they are known to be quite intelligent and trainable.
Your Havanese should be fed a high-quality, well-balanced diet that is formulated for small breeds. When selecting a brand, look for one that is nutritionally complete and balanced, free of fillers, and made with wholesome ingredients. The food should have a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats as well as vitamins and minerals to meet the unique needs of your pup. In addition to a healthy diet, you should also give your Havanese plenty of fresh water, smaller portions multiple times a day, and provide snacks designed specifically for their breed.
Prior to the arrival of your new Havanese, it is important to create a safe home environment. First, you should ensure that any potential hazards such as cleaning supplies, electrical cords, and other sharp objects are out of the pup's reach. It's also beneficial to puppy-proof the home, particularly blocking stairs, as the Havanese is a small breed and relatively low to the ground. Additionally, create separate areas for eating, potty training and playing. Place comfortable dog bedding in the designated spots and become familiar with your pet's favorite toys.
Havanese dogs come in all sorts of sizes. The size of a fully grown Havanese ranges from 8-11 inches and a weight range of 7-13 pounds. Most breeders designate puppies as Toy, Miniature, and Standards. Toy measuring 8-9 inches, Miniature measuring 9-10 inches, and Standard measuring 10-11 inches. Ultimately, the size of a Havanese is determined by their parents since a small female combined with a small male may result in a litter of very small puppies.
Generally speaking, it is not recommended to take your Havanese running. These smaller dogs are renowned for their relaxed temperament and are not built to sustain running for prolonged amounts of time. That said, if you do decide to take your Havanese running, be sure to keep the runs short and start out slow. It is important to look for signs of fatigue in your pup, including heavy panting and slowing of pace. If you notice these symptoms, it's time to head back home and rest. Most importantly, make sure to talk to your vet beforehand and button up proper safety protocols.
Generally, Havaneses are great family dogs and are known for their friendly temperament. They are sociable, and if raised with children, can make wonderful companions. Havaneses typically have a lot of patience with kids and can put up with a lot of tiring play. They are incredibly smart, so they can learn how to behave in various situations. It's very important to properly socialize and train a Havaneses around children so that your dog knows how to handle itself with kids and what is expected of them.
Training a Havanese successfully requires a commitment from both the dog and the owner. It is important to be patient, consistent, and positive as Havanese will not usually respond to aggressive training methods. Start the training process slowly with short, frequent sessions and smaller goals. Give the dog plenty of praise when they succeed with a behavior and avoid punishing them if they fail as this will only cause fear and lead to further behavioral problems.
