Questions & Answers
Havaneses are undeniably one of the most endearing dog breeds! While their unique and spirited personalities draw many to the breed, the most interesting thing about them is that they are one of only two breeds credited to Cuba. The other breed is a large, white hunting dog called the Cuban Mastiff. What sets a Havanese apart from other small breeds is their unexpectedly robust ability to enjoy different kinds of activities. They are good family dogs and are also great for agility and obedience training. They love to please their owners, which makes them especially interactive and intelligent.
The Havanese breed is known for its beautiful, luxurious coat. The coat typically falls into two layersan inner layer of soft, fluffy fur and an outer layer that is made of coarser hair which can be tightly curled. This double-coated canine is also surprisingly low-shedding, making it an ideal companion for those with allergies. The silky coat of the Havanese can come in a range of colors, though they're most commonly white or cream. They require a routine brushing and occasionally it might be necessary to have a professional groomer trim the fur.
Your Havanese should be fed an appropriate, nutritionally balanced diet tailored to their age and specific nutritional needs. We recommend consulting your veterinarian for information on the proper food to give your Havanese based on their weight, breed, and activity level. Most Havanese will do well with a high-quality dry food that is designed for small breeds. Avoid foods that contain artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, and make sure the first ingredient on the food label is a quality protein source like real meat, poultry, or fish.
Before bringing your new Havanese pup home, it's important to make sure you are as prepared as possible. Begin by puppy-proofing your home; move or secure hazardous and toxic items, consider installing safety gates on stairways if you have them, and make sure any plants you have are non-toxic to pets. Next, gather the necessary supplies: food and water bowls, treats, bed, collar and leash, nail trimmer, comb and brush, toys, and doggy waste bags. It's also important to create a routine as puppies learn quickly when consistency is applied.
Havaneses typically come in small sizes ranging from four to nine pounds. As a breed, the Havaneses stays pretty small, typically with a height of 8-11 inches. However, these measurements can vary depending on diet and activity levels of each individual animal. They have a long, fluffy coat that tends to be mostly white while other colors like black, gray, and sable can also be seen. The Havaneses is known to be a very lively and intelligent breed, and they need lots of attention and exercise to stay healthy.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Havanese each day will depend on your pet's age, health, and activity level. Generally speaking, adult Havanese should be taken on at least two 30-minute walks each day, while younger Havanese should have closer to 45 minutes of walking and basic exercise such as playful activities. If your Havanese is dealing with any bone or joint issues, or if they are very old, talk to your vet about appropriate exercise levels for your pet.
Havaneses can be excellent family pets. They are very loyal, intelligent, and affectionate; plus, they typically get along well with children. They are relatively small, so in contrast with larger breeds, they don't need the same amount of space and exercise. Havaneses also don't bark excessively, making them ideal for families in apartments with close neighbors. Of course, good owners should always provide plenty of playtime and regular walks, but Havaneses are content with relatively less exercise than other breeds. This makes them ideal for busy families who need an easy going companion and friend.
There is no one definitive answer to how many minutes per day you should train your Havanese. It ultimately depends on the age, ability, and condition of your pet; however, as a general guideline, you should plan on dedicating at least 20 minutes per day to training your Havanese. This should be broken up into 2 3 different sessions throughout the day, and can be used to reinforce positive behaviors, introduce new commands, and even allow your pup to simply play around.
