Questions & Answers
Havanese are an extremely unique breed of small dog with a fascinating history. They are the national dog of Cuba and were originally bred to be companion dogs to Cuban nobility. This breed is highly intelligent and affectionate, with a strong tendency towards agility and obedience. They are also extremely loyal to their family, and can form strong emotional bonds. What is even more interesting about them is that they prefer to be with their humans and do not like to be left alone, indicating a deep level of devotion and trust.
The Havanese coat is a beautiful mix between wavy and silky. It is double layered, with a soft, fine undercoat and a longer outercoat that typically hangs down and frames the body. The texture of the coat can differ between individuals, but is generally cottony to the touch, and can be groomed into any number of styles. The natural coloring of the Havanese coat is predominantly white, but shades of cream, gold, red, and black are also possible.
Feeding your Havanese should take into account its size, age, activity level, and any health conditions. Generally, dry kibble should be balanced with fresh food, such as raw meats and vegetables. High-quality kibbles with wholesome ingredients are a great foundation for a healthy diet for Havanese. Consult with a vet to decide what food works best for your individual pup. Additionally, try to feed meals at the same time each day and watch portion sizes to ensure that your Havanese stays at a healthy weight.
Havanese are considered special dogs and they do have some special requirements that are important to meet. As they are high-energy dogs, they need daily exercise and ample playtime to get rid of their pent-up energy. Without daily exercise, they are at risk of developing behavioral problems, such as barking. Havanese also need to be brushed regularly to keep their coats healthy and prevent them from becoming matted. Socialization is also essential for Havanese, as it helps them get along with other pets and people.
Havanese puppies vary in size, but usually, will grow to weigh anywhere from 7 to 13 pounds and reach heights of 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the shoulder. Although not a guarantee, this makes the Havanese dog a suitable size for most households. Aside from size, Havanese puppies are known to have a cheerful disposition and be highly intelligent. They also may have long or short coats, as well as a large variety of colors, ranging from white, to cream, to black & tan.
A Havanese is a small dog, so it usually doesn't require a huge amount of exercise. With that said, regular movement is still important. To keep your Havanese happy and healthy, plan to walk them for at least 30 minutes per day in total. Depending on your schedule, you may want to break this up into multiple 15-minute walks or even breakout of 10-minute and 20-minute walks. In addition, be sure to give your Havanese plenty of time to run and explore off leash in a safe, secure environment.
Generally speaking, Havaneses do very well with other pets. They are incredibly social animals and tend to be very accepting of both other dogs and cats. They often become best friends with their fur-brothers and sisters, engaging in playing, snuggling, and of course, barking and meowing together. However, like with any pet, the Havaneses' compatibility with other animals will depend largely on their individual personalities at any given time. As with any pet, early socialization can go a long way to ensuring that the Havaneses get along with their furry counterparts.
Training your Havanese is an important way to develop the bond between you and your pet. To start, you should first create a consistent routine with your Havanese. This means making sure that each day your pet has the same arrangement of eating, walking, playing, and sleeping. Additionally, make sure to provide your Havanese with the proper amount of exercise as adequate exercise helps to promote a calm and well-mannered pooch. Beyond this, it is also important to provide plenty of reward-based training by using treats, toys, and plenty of verbal praise.
