Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a breed of small dog, belonging to the Bichon family, which originates from Havana, Cuba. Bred as companion animals, these dogs have a long, silky coat and a tail that curls onto their back. Generally, the Havanese have an even temperament, and they are popular with people looking for a fun, friendly companion for the family. They are intelligent, alert and inquisitive, yet they also have a gentle, affectionate side, which makes them ideal lapdogs.
It is possible for anyone to experience an allergic response to any animal, including Havaneses. That being said, the majority of Havaneses are hypoallergenic, meaning they shed very little fur and produce dander at a low level. However, this does not mean that an allergic reaction cannot occur. Allergies are highly individualized and depend on your particular sensitivities. If you are concerned about experiencing an allergic reaction to a Havaneses, the best thing to do is to visit a breeder and spend time around the dogs.
While Havaneses are relatively healthy, there are certain items you should avoid feeding them. Things such as chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, and products containing xylitol can be toxic for small dogs. Havaneses should also not be fed large quantities of sweet fruit treats, as even healthy snacks can lead to weight gain due to the high sugar content. Additionally, it's best to avoid adding table scraps to their diets as this can lead to nutritional imbalances and digestive issues.
Preparing for a new Havanese can be an exciting and rewarding experience! First, you should research the breed and understand the unique personality of the Havanese. Be sure to create a safe and comfortable living space for your dog, like a crate and soft bed. Have plenty of resources available to your canine friend such as chew toys and healthy treats. Get your pet up to date on vaccines and microchips, and plan a regular veterinarian schedule. Most importantly, provide your Havanese with plenty of stimulation and exercise so that they can stay healthy and active.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend largely on gender. On average, male Havanese puppies will grow to be about 9 to 11 inches in height and can weigh anywhere between 7 to 15 pounds. Female Havanese puppies tend to be smaller in size than their male counterparts, usually growing to be only 8 to 10 inches tall and weighing between 6 to 13 pounds. It is important to note that these measurements are not definitive and the size of your pup could fall outside of these averages. Ultimately, each individual pup will grow at their own rate and to their own size.
Havaneses need daily exercise to maintain their physical and mental health. Generally, it's recommended to allow about 20 minutes of walking, running, playing, or other forms of exercise for a Havaneses each day. This should be high enough intensity to get their heart rate elevated and their muscles warmed up. Of course, always consult your veterinarian to formulate an exercise plan specifically tailored to your pet. However, if your Havaneses has any known health issues, you should always follow your veterinarian's instruction for exercise and talk to them if you think your pet needs more or less exercise.
Havaneses are excellent companions for kids. They are known to be friendly, outgoing, and confident. They are also gentle, affectionate, and sociable. They make wonderful companion pets, especially for families with children. Not only will they love the attention from their kids, but Havaneses tend to be very patient and tolerant. They can be taught basic commands fairly easily and they enjoy spending time with their families. Additionally, their intelligence and playfulness make them a lot of fun for kids to be around. So overall, Havaneses make wonderful companions for kids of all ages.
While training a Havanese can be quite straightforward, it does depend on the individual dog, just like with any breed. In general, a Havanese oozes charm and is usually an eager learner if treated with respect and given plenty of love and affection. Indeed, a Havanese is known for its good-natured and joyful disposition. They are intelligent and are often referred to as the 'velvet-foot Havanese' due to a natural aptitude for learning.
