Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an intelligent breed of dog that have been popular since the 1800s. They are a small breed characterized by long, silky hair and a playful yet friendly temperament. Fun facts about Havaneses include the fact that they are skilled in agility competitions and do not shed much fur, making them hypoallergenic. They come in a variety of colors, such as black and white, brown and white, fawn, and even a charcoal gray. Havaneses can also be trained to do tricks like play dead or roll over.
The Havanese breed has a signature long, silky, even-textured coat that can range from pure white to a combination of cream, white, and light brown to black and white. It's a non-shedding and low dander breed, making it the ideal choice for individuals and families suffering from allergies. Many owners opt to keep their pup's coat either long and full or with his or her trademark round puppy cut. In either look, the coat will require regular brushing and combing to ensure that matting does not occur.
Havaneses should not be fed chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, bread dough, or avocado, as any of these items can be toxic and may cause serious health problems. Additionally, it is best to avoid table scraps. Although they may seem harmless, many foods commonly found in the home – such as fats, seasonings, and sugar – are not healthy for Havaneses and could lead to weight gain and other problems. It is important to strictly follow the feeding and caloric recommendations for your Havaneses as per the guidance of your veterinarian.
Before you get a Havanese, it's important to purchase essential items to better care for your pup. You'll need a lightweight, sturdy leash with an adjustable collar or harness for walking and training. You'll also need dog food and several bowls: one for food, one for water, and a third for treats. Keep in mind, Havanese are playful and need chew toys, interactive toys, and balls to keep them occupied. Owners should also have grooming tools such as a brush, nail clippers, shampoo, and conditioner to keep their coat looking and feeling healthy.
While Havaneses are small dogs, they can actually appear larger due to their unique coat and thick builds. Though they are not considered a large breed by most standards, they are still a very sturdy, confident and strong-willed breed, and some may even regard them as 'big dogs' in personality. The American Kennel Club lists the Havaneses as a Toy breed, meaning they don't grow to be more than 12 pounds, but they will still need plenty of exercise and playtime to stay healthy.
Walking your Havanese pup for an appropriate amount of time each day is essential for good health. Generally, you should take your dog for a walk for about 30 minutes per day, split between two 15-minute walks. However, the exact amount of time your pup should be walking will vary depending on their age and energy levels. For an active pup, you may want to increase the amount of time you are walking her, up to an hour per day, but just make sure you give her plenty of breaks in between where she can rest.
Havaneses are an excellent breed for first-time owners. Highly intelligent, these small canines have both playful energy and lots of snuggles to offer to their owners. Furthermore, they get along well with other pets and children, making them a great breed for all types of household. Training a Havaneses can be an easy and rewarding experience, as they are eager to please and extremely loyal. These dogs have an independent spirit and are not known to be barkers, which makes them ideal for apartment and city-dwelling.
Havaneses are a breed of dog known for their intelligence and devotion to their owners, so it makes sense that they are considered smart dogs. Although there is no scientific measurement to definitively quantify the smartness of any breed of dog, there are some behaviors that stereotypical intelligence level can be based on when assessing the intelligence of a Havaneses. For instance, Havaneses have been known to be quick learners, understanding new commands with fewer repetitions than other breeds and remembering them for a long time, as well as showing a knack for problem-solving.
