Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an exceptionally intelligent dog breed that was initially bred as a companion animal in Cuba. They are the only breed with a rare double coat of silky, soft fur. Fun facts about Havaneses include that they are considered to be hypoallergenic and have the ability to learn commands quickly. Also they are typically non-aggressive and have an excellent sense of direction. Another fun fact is that they are known to be very loyal and are often described as the perfect combination of intelligence and temperament.
Havaneses do not have an official determination of hypoallergenic status. While their coats are usually well suited for owners with allergies, there are a few factors to consider. Their coats are long and dense and require regular brushing and groomings. This can cause some individuals to have allergic reactions. Additionally, Havaneses may drool and shed which can further exacerbate allergic reactions in some people.
Havaneses eat a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. Some of the most popular choices among Havaneses are bananas, papaya, mango, carrots, potatoes, brown rice, chicken, beef, and fish. Nutritional requirements vary depending on the age and activity level of the individual dog, but overall a Havaneses should enjoy a healthy and balanced diet of all of these food items. In addition, treats and snacks can be used to reward a Havaneses during training and for special occasions, as long as they are not overfed.
Before getting a Havanese, it is important to get some basic essentials for you and your pup. First, you should get a comfortable bed for your Havanese, ideally one with a removable cover to keep it clean. Secondly, you'll need to get some quality food, as well as treats for when your pup behaves well. Additionally, you'll want to get a collar and leash for when you take your pup on walks. Also, a crate with a secure cover will be important for when you need to leave your pup home alone.
Havaneses, or Havana Silk Dogs, typically grow to be about 9-11 inches tall from shoulder to paw when fully grown. However, some Havaneses may be a bit larger. Generally, Havaneses weigh between 7-13 pounds as adults. Due to their small size, they are classified as a 'toy dog' breed. This means they have a longer lifespan than medium and large dogs, living for up to 16 years old or more with proper care.
The amount of daily walking your Havanese should have is ultimately dependent on their own individual health and age. Generally speaking, though, it's recommended to give a Havanese at least 30 minutes of activity on a daily basis. This could include free play, walking, running, or other physically stimulating activities. Depending on their age, capacity, and personal needs, you may even want to increase that activity to 45 minutes or even an hour. Just make sure that, if you do increase their walking time, that you do so gradually to ensure that your Havanese is comfortable and safe.
Havaneses can make excellent first-time dog owners! These spunky, friendly, and loyal little pooches known as the "Parisian lapdogs" are alert and social, making them easily adaptable to an array of owners. They are one of the oldest known breeds, known for their signature human-like facial expressions and high trainability. They may be small, but they are strong-willed, making them a great starter breed for those willing to invest time, love, commitment, and consistency into their training.
The best way to train your Havanese is to start early, use consistent, positive reinforcement, and be patient. Begin by socializing your pup with both people and other animals to get them used to new environments and comfortable around others. Teach them some basic commands such as "sit" and "come", encouraging them with treats and praise when they follow them. You can also take your Havanese to professional obedience classes to get the right guidance and learn proper technique.
