Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, playful, and intelligent breed of dog that are part of the Bichon family. They originate from the Caribbean island of Cuba and are known for their long, silky white coats. They are considered good as family dogs as they are friendly and obedient. Despite their small size, they are brave and sturdy and can make excellent watchdogs. They enjoy learning tricks and commands, and they excel in agility and obedience competitions. These fun-loving dogs can be high-energy, so be sure to provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation activities.
The Havanese coat is luxurious and varies greatly in texture, from soft and silky to wooly and wiry. It can come in a wide array of colors, including silver, blonde, cream, blue, black, chocolate, gray, apricot, and red. The Havanese coat is a single-coat type, so it does not require a lot of grooming. This breed's coat should be left long and is groomed in a layered, shaggy look.
As with all breeds, it is important to be aware of what food is safe and appropriate for Havaneses. While some human foods can safely be shared between humans and dogs, there are many that should be avoided. Foods like avocados, garlic, onions, raisins, and chocolate can be extremely toxic to Havaneses and should always be kept out of their reach. Xylitol, a popular artificial sweetener, can be extremely dangerous and should never be given to your Havaneses.
Though Havanese are generally considered low-maintenance and easy-to-care-for dogs, they do have certain breed-specific requirements. Havanese are social animals and need plenty of attention and regular interaction with their owners. They can also become quite anxious when left alone, so it's important that their owners dedicate plenty of time to showering them with affection and providing them with exercise and mental stimulation (especially if they're not being taken outside for regular walks).
Havaneses are a toy breed of dogs and they typically weigh 7-13 pounds and measure a maximum of 9-11 inches tall. This makes them one of the smallest breeds of dogs, and their small size is often a big selling point for potential Havaneses owners. When full-grown, they rarely exceed these dimensions, making them an ideal pet where space (or the lack thereof) is a factor. Even though they are small, they are sturdy outside and well-adjustable inside, making them excellent companions and adaptable to most conditions.
Yes, Havaneses are active dogs that require daily exercise. They love to play and can stay active for hours at a time. Physically, they should receive at least one to two walks in a day and plenty of playtime or outdoor activities in addition. As alert and intelligent dogs, they do well with mental stimulation through toys, agility courses, and other activities. However, because they are quite small it’s important to be mindful of weather extremes and keep them safe by engaging in appropriate activities for their size.
Absolutely, Havaneses make wonderful family dogs! Lively and trainable, these dogs simply adore the attention of their family and thrive on close bonds. They generally do well with children and typically have easy-going personalities. Havaneses are also easy to train and can be taught to do some amazing tricks. Furthermore, they tend to enjoy spending time with their owners, making them great companions and source of entertainment.
Training a Havanese is relative and depends on the amount of dedication and commitment that is put into the process by both the dog and the owner. It is important to maintain consistent rules and boundaries. Reward-based positive reinforcement approaches are recommended for teaching basic obedience, which may allow faster and longer-lasting results. With appropriate techniques and hard work, your Havanese can learn to be an obedient and well-mannered pet. Havanese are smart and their ability to learn makes the process easier and enjoyable for both of you.
