Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, companion dog breed with a long, silky white coat. They are also known as Bichons Havanais and are part of the Bichon family of breeds, along with Malteses, Bichon Frises, and Löwchens. They originated from the island of Cuba and have a very social and lively personality. They are gentle, intelligent, and highly trainable. They get along perfectly with children and other dogs, making them perfect pets for families.
Managing allergies with Havanese can be done by ensuring their coat is kept clean and trimmed regularly. This will limit the amount of allergens that a pet can bring into the home. Additionally, as a hypoallergenic breed, ensuring that the coat is free from dirt and dander will be beneficial in limiting the amount of allergens that a pet can spread around the home. Vacuuming and mopping regularly may also help contribute to a lower allergen count.
It's important to feed your Havaneses a healthy, balanced diet that will meet all their nutritional needs. Unfortunately, there are a number of foods that Havaneses should not eat. This includes any sort of processed or junk food, including candy, potato chips, and fast food. Sweets and certain fruits such as grapes and raisins may also be toxic for Havaneses, so it's best to avoid them altogether. Another common food to stay away from is onion, which can make Havaneses very sick.
Havanese are relatively low maintenance, but they do have a few basic needs to be happy and healthy. They require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, as these are vital for their long-term well-being. Grooming is also a must for Havanese; they need to be brushed regularly and their paws and nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent matting and overgrowth. Socialization needs to be encouraged when they are young and even throughout their lives.
Generally speaking, your Havanese puppy will reach its adult size within one year of age. A fully grown Havanese will typically reach a height around 9-10 inches (23-25 cm) and weigh anywhere from 7-13 pounds (3-6 kg). However, it's important for pet owners to remember that no two pups are the same, so slight variations from these measurements are possible. As your pup grows, you should keep an eye on their weight to ensure that they are on track with their breed size expectations.
Havaneses generally love to swim, and they usually take to the water quite quickly! This is because of their long, strong hind legs that make it easy to propel themselves through the water, as well as their furry coats that keep them warm. Havaneses are natural-born swimmers, often taking to the water as early as 8 weeks old when they are traditionally introduced to swimming. Because Havaneses are so eager to get into the pool or the lake, it's recommended that their owners provide ample opportunities to allow them to do so as much as possible.
Yes, Havaneses usually get along very well with kids. They are loyal, gentle, and easygoing dogs that can be very patient and tolerant of young children's enthusiasm. They form strong bonds with their owners and their families, and kids are often included in their circle of affection. In addition, they love to play and they have an adorable personality that children can’t resist.
It is difficult to answer one exact number of minutes for training your Havaneses as different dogs may require different lengths of time in order to accomplish different objectives. Generally, a recommended starting point would be 30 minutes per day; however, if the objective is to increase focus or compliance, it's best to extend the duration and break it up into several training sessions per day. To best prepare your Havaneses for any situation, aim to practice specific commands and behaviors for at least five minutes per day and use positive reinforcement to reward the desired outcome.
