Questions & Answers
The Havanese is a small, sheep-like breed of dog that is native to Cuba. These dogs have a long, thick coat of silky hair which comes in several colors. The Havanese are intelligent and loyal companion dogs that make ideal family pets. They are known for being sociable, affectionate, and adaptable – all qualities that make them great with both children and older adults. The average Havanese lives to be 11-16 years old and loves to be around people.
It is not likely that owning a Havaneses will cause you to have allergies. However, it is important to note that since all breeds of dogs have a specific set of common allergens, some individuals may be more sensitive to them than others. If an individual has a history of allergies to dogs, it would be better to avoid getting a Havaneses in order to limit their risks. It is also important to be aware that some Havaneses may have hair that is longer than others, which can increase the risk of allergy symptoms due to increased shedding.
Feeding a Havaneses the wrong type of food can be detrimental to their health. Refrain from feeding them chocolate, due to the presence of theobromine, as well as raisin, grapes, onions, garlic, nuts, and sugar. Stick to commercial dog food brands that are specifically designed for small breeds or choose kibble specifically designed for a Havaneses' size and age. Avoid feeding them human food as it is not nutritionally balanced and may cause stomach issues, vomiting, and other complications.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, there are several things you should prepare to ensure your pup has the best start in their life with you. Start by puppy proofing your home. Make sure that all cleaning products, wires, or anything that could be potentially hazardous to your pup is out of reach. Additionally, prepare some comfortable places for your pup to sleep and relax. If you are not crate training, purchase a comfortable bed and puppy-proof a corner of a room for your little Havanese.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on various factors, such as their parents' size, diet, and general health. Generally though, this breed tends to be a small dog, weighing in at 8 to 11 pounds when full grown and standing 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder. To get an idea of the size your puppy will become as an adult, it's wise to frequently measure them and make sure they are getting the proper nutrition needed for their continued growth and development. Remember that the healthier your pup is, the more likely they will reach their potential size.
A Havanese should be walked for around 30 minutes to an hour each day. However, this amount may vary depending on your furry friend's age. For younger dogs, shorter walks are more suitable; for older dogs, shorter walks are suitable paired with more frequent breaks. If you have a Havanese puppy, you can get your pup used to walking by starting with short walks and gradually increasing the amount of time spent walking as your pup grows. Additionally, your pup will need to be taken outside to complete their business.
Havaneses can make wonderful first-time pets for the right owner. They are generally affectionate, intelligent, playful, and thrive on human interaction. They are very responsive and eager to please, and with proper socialization and training, can become excellent companions. They do require a certain amount of grooming care, but it's minimal compared to other breeds. Additionally, they tend to adapt well to a variety of living situations, including apartments or homes with yards. With patience and consistency, they can make excellent additions to the family.
It is possible to train a Havanese, however, it may not be easy. Some will pick up commands and cues quickly while others may take longer. It will depend on your commitment to consistent reinforcement and how well you and your Havanese establish the proper communication for learning. A good starting point for success is to enroll in a group puppy or obedience class. These classes can provide the proper environment to help train your Havanese and offer guidance and support. Additionally, positive reinforcement and patience should be employed to help create the most effective training experience.
