Questions & Answers
The Havanese is a small, energetic breed of dog which originated in Cuba. It is part of the Bichon family of breeds, and is known for its friendly, cheerful personality. It is considered to be an ideal companion pet, as they get along well with other animals and children, and are smart and easy to train. The Havanese is a lap dog, weighing only seven to thirteen pounds and boasting a soft, silky coat that can come in a wide variety of colors.
The Havanese has a soft, luxurious, silky coat that is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. It typically grows to a length of around four to eight inches and can range from straight to curly. Common colors are white, cream, chestnut, grey, blue, silver, and black. The Havanese's coat needs to be groomed regularly to prevent matting, and to keep it looking its best. Surplus hair should be carefully trimmed, but it should never be completely shaved.
Havaneses are omnivores, so they can eat a wide variety of foods. A well-balanced diet for Havaneses should consist of high-quality proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and other beneficial nutrients. Their diet should also include treats and chew toys to keep them occupied. An appropriate feeding schedule for Havaneses is to offer them two meals a day, with the portions adjusted in accordance with their age and activity level.
Havanese do not have any special requirements that are unique to the breed. However, they do need regular exercise and grooming, including brushing and occasional trimming or clipping. They are very social and need to be around people as much as possible. They enjoy activities, obedience training, and playing games. Like all dogs, regular veterinary checkups and vaccinations are essential. Havanese are intelligent, energetic, and loving dogs who thrive on the interaction with their family. Despite their small size, they still benefit from regular walks and playtime.
Depending on its gender, a Havanese puppy can grow to a size varying from 8-11 inches in height and 7-13 lbs in weight once fully grown. Most puppies tend to reach their final size by approximately one year of age, though some may grow very slowly and take a little longer. You can also expect your puppy's size to be affected by its diet and activity levels. To get an accurate idea of when your Havanese puppy will reach its full size, it's best to consult with your veterinarian for a weight and health check.
Generally speaking, yes, Havaneses do like to swim! It's actually one of their favorite activities to do in warmer temperatures. Swimming allows these intelligent and active dogs to stay cool, get plenty of exercise, and have some fun at the same time. They have a natural instinct to swim because of their lively nature and have an affinity for water. With plenty of Praise and Rewards, training them to swim can be relatively easy. The Havaneses usually take well to swimming and the process of teaching them to swim makes it an enjoyable time for both owner and dog.
Generally speaking, Havaneses can be great companions for kids. They are known for being affectionate and intelligent with a clown-like personality, and are highly play-oriented and can bring hours of fun for kids. Havaneses also form strong bonds with their owners, including children where the connection can be particularly strong. Many Havaneses, especially those that are socialized, accept and appreciate children being around them, and will often be protective or caring towards them, as well.
Training a Havanese can be relatively easy, depending on the individual dog and the experience level of the trainer. A lot of the success relies on the commitment level of the owner; since Havanese can be quite smart, it is important to dedicate time and consistency to any kind of training. Training should incorporate positive reinforcement to get the desired result, as Havanese typically respond better than with negative stimuli. Encouraging and rewarding desired behaviors will incentivize the pup to continue in the same fashion.
