Questions & Answers
Havaneses are intelligent, loyal, and known for having an upbeat personality. They are known as the “dancing breed” as they have a unique way of prancing as they walk and react to their environment. They originated in Cuba, and were incredibly popular in the United States before the Cuban Revolution. Their coat comes in a variety of colors, including silver with white and black tips, and a beige. Typically, the Havaneses stands between 9 and 11 inches tall when fully grown and weighs around 7 pounds.
It really depends on your specific allergies. While many people are allergic to different breeds of dogs, this does not necessarily mean that the Havaneses breed specifically will have an effect on you. While people may be allergic to a particular breed, many allergies are breed-independent, triggered by pet dander, saliva or fur, and may affect any animal not just one breed. Therefore, it is impossible to definitively answer whether or not a Havaneses will cause you to have allergies without first assessing your individual sensitivity.
Owners of Havaneses should generally avoid giving them food treats sourced from human meals, and focus instead on feeding them high-quality commercially-produced dog food. Human food may contain ingredients not suitable for a Havaneses diet, such as large amounts of garlic, onion, or other spices; elements high in sugar, fat, or salt; and artificial preservatives. Even what may seem to be an innocuous food for humans, such as sweets, can cause an upset stomach or more serious health issues in pups.
Preparing a home for your new Havanese pup is an important part of the process prior to bringing them home. One great place to start is by pet-proofing: Secure any loose cords or wires that they could chew on and store small items like jewelry and medications in drawers or cabinets. Make sure that any houseplants are pet-safe and move any breakables out of their reach.
Havanese puppies typically reach their full-size around a year of age. Adult male puppies weigh in at an average of seven to thirteen pounds, while adult females weigh somewhere between seven and twelve pounds. This makes Havanese puppies a great choice for a tiny companion. Though it's impossible to make an exact prediction as to how much your puppy will weigh when fully grown, rest assured that the full-grown size will be well within these parameters. You can help to ensure healthy growth and development by feeding your pup a healthy diet and giving them plenty of exercise.
Havaneses are a typically very active breed, so they require a decent amount of exercise to stay healthy and in good shape. A good rule of thumb is to provide your Havaneses with an hour of exercise daily if possible. This can come in the form of aerobic exercise such as swimming, running, and walking, as well as agility and mental stimulation activities like fetch, agility courses, and puzzle toys. Longer, higher intensity activities should be limited to twice a week.
Havaneses are wonderful family dogs with a number of traits that make them great companions. They are incredibly loyal and have great temperaments. They are also naturally curious, so they make great house dogs but can also handle life in an outdoor setting. Havaneses are also excellent watchdogs and guard dogs, as they are naturally alert and highly protective of their family even to strangers. They are intelligent, loving, and dynamic, making them perfect for families with time and energy to put into training them and balance different activities.
Training a Havanese can be a rewarding experience, but it requires consistency, patience, and lots of positive reinforcement. Havanese puppies have an endearing sprightliness and intelligence, making them eager to learn and please their owner. The breed is noted for being cheerful and responsive to training. However, it is important to understand that, like all other breeds, Havanese require a disciplined approach to training for the best results.
