Questions & Answers
Havaneses are one of the most popular toy dog breeds around. In addition to being incredibly cute, they have some unique and interesting facts associated with them. For example, they were initially bred in Cuba to be both a companion and watchdog, and are the only native Cuban dog breed. Despite their small size, they are very intelligent and can learn commands quickly. Additionally, their fur is wavier than most other breeds and, though they often appear white, can come in a variety of colors including black, beige, and cream.
Havaneses are not considered hypoallergenic. The American Kennel Club classifies the Havaneses as part of the non-sporting group and doesn't identify it as a hypoallergenic breed. It is a common misconception that any breed of small size is considered hypoallergenic, but this is not the case for a Havaneses. While their coat and dander may not be as likely to trigger allergies as other breeds, they are still not classified as hypoallergenic.
It is important to recognize that there may be certain foods that should be avoided when feeding a Havanese. Human food such as onions, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, and grapes contain toxic substances that can be dangerous to a Havaneses, and should be avoided at all times. Additionally, Havaneses should not be fed foods that contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Raw meats and uncooked bones are also not suitable for these small dogs due to potential issues with salmonella and other bacteria, as well as choking hazards.
Before bringing home a Havanese, the owner should have essential items such as a collar, leash, food and water dishes, id tags, food, treats, a brush, a crate or bed, toys, and potty training supplies, such as puppy pads. Other recommended items include a comfortable bed, a doorbell to teach your pup to potty outside, and a comb or detangler to keep the pup's coat looking healthy.
Havaneses typically grow to be about 8 to 12 inches tall and weigh between 10 to 20 pounds fully grown. As such, they are a relatively small dog breed and notable for their silky white coats and curly tails. While size can vary with each individual, on average a full-grown Havaneses will not exceed 20 pounds. They are known for being very active yet gentle and playful. Havaneses love to be around their people and can form strong bonds with their owners. Overall, they tend to remain relatively small in size and are easy to care for in a variety of settings.
It is certainly possible to take your Havanese running. However, there are certain caveats to consider. As a small dog, the Havanese breed may tire quickly, so it is important to start slowly, with shorter distances. Be aware of any potential overheating, as Havanese have very heavy coats. In addition, their breed is not particularly well suited to prolonged exercise. It may be preferable to take them only on shorter runs, or on running paths that are scenic and low-traffic but not excessively long or grueling.
Absolutely, Havaneses are great family dogs! They are always eager to please and have a fantastic temperament, making them a great choice for a family addition. Havaneses are very social and have a lot of energy, which can encourage children to engage in physical activities. These dogs are also said to be relatively easy to train, which makes them good companions for any family. Additionally, Havaneses are loyal and loving, and can become a great safety system for the home. They have a natural inquisitiveness that makes them good watchdogs, but they are also gentle and easy going.
Yes, Havaneses are intelligent dogs. Known for their role as companion dogs and clowns, Havaneses often show impressive problem solving skills and learn quickly. Owners report that these dogs understand and remember commands and are quick to pick up new tricks and behaviors. Havaneses are also known for their strong desire to please their owners, which can contribute to their level of intelligence. With plenty of mental and physical stimulation as well as affection from their owners, these smart dogs can reach their full potential.
