Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a beloved toy breed known for their intelligence, sweet disposition, and good-natured fun. They are a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Miniature Poodle, which explains their curly, thick coat and intelligence. Havaneses were brought to Cuba in the 1800s, and today they are recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The Havanese coat is truly unique. It is fairly long, silky, and light in texture, and usually kept in a "puppy cut" or long. The Havanese coat does not shed and, with proper grooming, is quite easy to maintain. It also comes in many different colors, including white, cream, chocolate, silver, gold, black, blue, and rare combinations of colors. When cut short, the coat gives the pup a very dapper look, and when kept long and flowing, it gives them a more relaxed fluff-ball look.
It is important to know what not to feed Havaneses as certain foods can be harmful to their health and development. Fruits and vegetables, while an important part of any diet, should not make up more than 20% of a Havaneses's diet and raw potatoes and citrus fruits should be avoided altogether. Dairy products can also give Havaneses an upset stomach and are best avoided or fed in very small amounts. High-fat, high sugar treats such as chocolate and sweets should be avoided due to the risk of weight gain related illnesses.
Before welcoming your new Havanese into your home, you should make sure you have all the essentials they will need. You should invest in a few basic items, such as a collar and leash, food and water dishes, food, and toys. Furthermore, you will want to prepare a comfortable bedding area, as well as a safe place where they can retreat to when feeling scared or overwhelmed. An ergonomic brush, training aids, and treats for training should also be on your purchasing list.
Havaneses come in a variety of sizes, depending on the particular breed. Toy Havaneses typically reach heights of 8-10 inches, while Standard Havaneses can reach heights of 10-15 inches. Miniature Havaneses tend to be the smallest, with heights ranging from 8-11 inches. The weights of Havaneses can vary between the difference breeds, but all are rather small and typically weigh between 7-18 pounds. When selecting a Havaneses, it is important to research the size and breed to ensure you select the right size for your home.
It is certainly possible to take your Havanese running, however it's important to ensure that you and your pup have a few key elements in place first. Is your Havanese up-to-date on vaccinations? If not, it would be best to get them vaccinated before taking them out for any extended period of time. Additionally, they should have basic obedience training so they can respond to basic commands and follow your instructions. Proper nutrition and hydration are also important to consider.
It is generally accepted that Havaneses make good "companion pets" that can get along with other pets. That being said, it is important to introduce any other pets slowly and to monitor their interaction to ensure that it is positive and constructive. In many cases, Havaneses can become great friends with cats and other dogs, but proper socialization and training from a young age is key to ensure such a relationship. Many owners report that their Havaneses get along wonderfully with other pets, while others find that their Havaneses are more reserved around other animals.
Training a Havanese can be relatively easy, as this is an intelligent breed with a strong desire to please. However, it is important to understand that every dog is different and one person's experience may be different than another's. To have an easier time potty training, socialization, teaching tricks or commands, it is recommended to start training early on and remain consistent to establish clear expectations. To get the best results, use a reward-based training approach to ensure maximum success. Additionally, be sure to exercise patience and give your pup plenty of love, reward, and encouragement.
