Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an intriguing breed of dog! They are considered a "designer" breed, with a combination of both Bichon Frise and Cuban Cocker Spaniel physical traits. One unique feature of Havaneses is their thick, curly coats which often have a floor-length appearance from a combination of two layers of fur a short undercoat and a longer topcoat. Other fun fact Havaneses only come in solid colors, usually white, or a combination of white and cream.
The Havanese coat is a very unique breed of dog. It is usually a smooth, silky coat that is non-shedding and hypoallergenic. It typically is a single layer coat that is never curly and falls just to the floor. It can be wavy in texture, but it is usually straight, and has a plush and glossy sheen to it. In texture, the Havanese can vary with colors ranging from white to black, with many shades of brown, cinnamon, and silver.
Generally, Havaneses have diets that consist of more carbohydrates and less protein compared to other breeds, but all dogs require a balanced and complete diet. To remain healthy and happy, Havaneses should be given food formulated for small dogs, with quality proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Of special note, Havaneses may be prone to developing dental issues, so while chew toys can help, soft food should be given whenever possible to keep teeth and gums healthy and strong.
Havanese are generally active, easy-going, and adaptive dogs who often make good family pets. However, because of their small size, they may need extra care and attention. As with any pet, they need daily exercise, proper nutrition, plenty of companionship, training, and grooming. Havanese may require more human interaction than some breeds, as they can become lonely if left alone for too long. Additionally, as with any dog, they do need regular healthcare, including vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and keeping their nails trimmed.
Havaneses come in varying sizes, and ideally, size should depend on the specific needs of the family or individual. Each Havaneses has an important size range. Generally, the sizes range between eight to nine pounds with a standing height of eight to nine inches. The traditional Havaneses is on the smaller side, thus making the breed a great companion or lapdog for those unable to handle large dogs. They are built to be compact yet strong. They can often times be seen in show rings or competing in agility and obedience.
Yes, Havaneses are incredibly skilled swimmers! They're one of the few breeds of dogs that actually enjoy swimming instead of merely tolerating it. Swimming is a great activity to keep Havaneses active and cool during summer months. The breed's smooth, muscular body and short legs make them an ideal swimmer, allowing them to move through the water with ease and speed. Additionally, the unique double-coat enables Havaneses to remain comfortable and warm while in the water, and their strong front legs and webbed hind feet help them propel through the waves with ease.
Generally speaking, Havaneses get along very well with other pets. They are known for being friendly and sociable dogs that form strong bonds with their family members. Their intelligence allows them to quickly learn how to interact with other animals, making them a great companion for cats, birds, and other small animals. When introducing a Havaneses to another pet, it is important to take it slowly, being sure to provide plenty of positive reinforcement and encouragement to make sure all animals are comfortable. With proper socialization, Havaneses and other pets can form loving relationships and enjoy playing together.
The amount of time needed to train a Havanese depends largely on a variety of factors, including the age of the dog, the type of training, and the breed's prior experience. Generally, for basic behavioral training, it is recommended to train a Havanese for up to 10-15 minutes per day. Over the course of the day, you may need to train your Havanese for a total of 30-60 minutes, broken into smaller segments which include training, exercise, and playtime.
