Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, affectionate breed of dog originating from Havana, Cuba. This breed is considered a member of the Bichon group of dogs and is covered with a silky and elegant coat, ranging in colors of sand, cream, black, white, sable, and gold. They are typically 10-15 inches in height, and weigh 7-13 pounds. Havanese are generally quite intelligent and easy to train, making them a great companion for families of all sizes. They are also very friendly and social, often developing strong bonds with their owners.
Havaneses are considered to be hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding, non-shedding coats. They produce minimal dander, an important factor in triggering allergies. They also have very low saliva production compared to some other breeds, which can also act as an allergen in some people. To further minimize the risk of allergies, Havaneses should be well groomed and bathed regularly, since grooming can help to remove any accumulated dander and other allergens.
As with any breed of dog, Havaneses should not be given table scraps, bones, or any food that contains large amounts of sugar, salt, or fat. Additionally, they should not be routinely fed processed foods with by-products, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, or other additives. These foods can lead to health problems for Havaneses, such as obesity, allergies, pancreatitis, and even cancer. Fruits and veggies should not be given either as they may contain high levels of fiber and carbohydrates that cannot be digested correctly.
Before getting a Havanese, there are some important supplies and items that you'll need to purchase. A sturdy, comfortable crate is necessary to help with housebreaking, provide a safe place for your pup to relax, and give them an area that is their own. It's also important to stock up on food and water bowls, high quality pet food, grooming supplies, chew toys, and a collar with tag. You should also purchase a brush for their long coat, as well as a designated shampoo to keep their coat clean and healthy.
Though Havaneses are small in size, they are considered big dogs because of their personalities. They tend to be confident, friendly, and outgoing, just like larger canines. Havaneses have a lot of energy and need a great deal of exercise and playtime to burn off their enthusiasm. With their intelligence and ability to learn quickly, they also need lots of mental stimulation to keep them engaged. Despite their size, these dogs are quite capable and excel at various canine sports, like agility.
Walking your Havanese is an essential part of your pup's overall physical and mental health. The amount of time they should spend walking daily depends on a few factors, such as their age, weight, and current physical condition. On average, Havanese dogs should get around 30-60 minutes of physical activity, depending on their specific needs. During this time, it's important to make sure your pup stays hydrated and that they don't become too overheated, as Havanese breeds are particularly prone to heat exhaustion.
Generally, Havaneses do quite well in households with other pets. While they are naturally friendly and outgoing toward other pets, it is important to properly introduce any new pets in the home and to socialize them properly. As long as they are properly socialized, Havaneses typically get along with other pets, such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals. They are also great with children, so a family that includes other four-legged friends will often find that Havaneses fit in with the other furry family members quite well.
Training a Havanese involves creating an environment where it feels comfortable, safe and confident and having regular practice runs for key commands and behaviors. To begin, break down training into 45-minute sessions and reward your pooch with treats when it gets something right. Also be consistent when it comes to the commands and hand signals and practice them frequently with them throughout the week. Additionally, positive reinforcement should be used more than punishment when it comes to corrections; if your Havanese doesn't obey a command, then use gentle words instead of shouting or getting angry.
