Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, lovable breed of dog that originated in Cuba. They are descendants of the “Tenerife”, a very ancient breed of pup whose heritage has been traced back to the Mediterranean. These lively and cuddly dogs have been known to be beloved members of Cuban families for centuries. Havanese are known for their wavy long coats that come in a variety of colors, including white, gold, and black. They are considered to be cheerful, gentle, and intelligent, and generally make excellent family pets.
The Havanese are known for their unique silky soft coat which is profuse and medium-long. They have a single layer coat which is abundant, but fine. The coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those with allergies. Many Havanese feature long, wavy locks of hair that reach the ground when standing. Others have curls that look like waves coming from the neck onto the shoulders. The head and body are covered with a soft curly undercoat while the legs are well feathered.
It is important to feed your Havanese a nutrient-rich, balanced diet to keep them healthy and happy. Nutritionally balanced foods are designed to meet their needs for vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids. Look for foods that contain USDA approved, all-natural ingredients and are specifically formulated for smaller dogs. Good diet options include high-quality dry kibble, fresh vegetables and fruits, and non-meat proteins like cooked eggs, beans, and peas.
Before bringing home a Havanese, it is important to prepare with the right supplies. A comfortable and safe crate is necessary to make your pup feel secure in its new home. Additionally, you should stock up on food, water, bowls, treats, and toys. Additionally, it is important to get high-quality grooming tools to help keep their coat healthy. Other handy supplies you should have ready include puppy pads, collar and leash, a brush, nail clippers, and toothbrush and toothpaste.
Havanese puppies come in various sizes as they grow up. Generally speaking, a full-grown Havanese will reach anywhere between 9 to 11 inches in terms of height. Generally, the male Havanese is slightly bigger than their female counterparts but they may differ slightly. With proper nutrition and exercise, your Havanese puppy will reach their full growth potential and be anywhere from 8 to 16 pounds when fully grown. Since they are considered a small breed, it can take one year or more for them to reach their full size.
Havaneses are an active breed and require a moderate amount of exercise. Adult Havaneses typically require at least 30-45 minutes of physical activity each day, such as walking, swimming, or playing fetch. It is important to ensure that the activity is balanced with rest, as well as weather permitting and ensuring that the area is free of hazards. Providing your Havaneses with plenty of playtime is one of the best ways to ensure they remain healthy and happy, enabling them to get the physical activity they need while having fun.
Havaneses are generally very friendly and social dogs that get along well with children. This cheerful breed has an affectionate nature and loves to play. They are patient and tolerant, making them great companions for kids of all ages. They can be a bit mischievous, but that's part of their charm. With early and consistent training, a Havaneses can learn how to interact politely with children and become a valued family pet. The breed is especially well suited for families with younger kids due to their knack for learning commands quickly and their sweet dispositions.
Training a Havanese can be both easy and difficult depending on the particular circumstances. They are intelligent and eager to please, but like all dogs, they may need reinforcement of the basics before they are comfortable with any new command. A positive attitude and lots of treats or praise can go a long way in helping your pup become a well behaved member of the family. It is important to start training during puppyhood and to establish your role as pack leader while teaching your pup basic commands every day.
