A Havanese is a breed of small dogs from Cuba. The breed dates back to the early 1800s and is believed to be a descendant of the Bichon type dogs. These fluffy, cuddly dogs stand between 8 and 11 inches tall and weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. Havanese are known for their pleasant personalities and intelligence they make popular, loving companions! Their coats are a single layer of soft, wavy hair that requires regular brushing.
The Havanese is a small breed with a long, silky, wavy coat. It usually has a white, pale cream, gold, chocolate, black, or a combination of these colors. In some cases, their coat is "parti-colored", which means multiple different colors or shades in the same coat. The coat is lightweight and considered hypoallergenic due to its lack of an undercoat. The Havanese coat has either smooth or wavy hair, but should never be curly.
Havaneses generally enjoy a balanced diet of meat proteins, vegetables, and grains. Common dishes include arroz con pollo (rice with chicken), tamales, ropa vieja (shredded beef), boliche (beef pot roast) and many other Cuban favorites. Additionally, Havaneses enjoy a variety of fruits, including mangoes, starfruit, guavas, sugar apples, papayas, bananas, plums, guineos, strawberries, and many others.
To properly prepare your home for your new Havanese, you should make sure the environment is safe and comfortable. Start by puppy-proofing for any small objects such as choking hazards, toxic chemicals, and electrical wires that might be lurking around. Additionally, purchase necessities such as a food and water bowl, a collar, a leash, a bed, and some toys to stimulate the pup during playtime. Lastly, make sure the pup has access to an area which is easily accessible for when they need to go to the bathroom.
The size of your Havanese puppy is dependent on the puppy's parents. In general, full-grown Havanese weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. However, most Havanese puppies born and bred in the United States will usually be fully grown at around 9-11 pounds. Depending on their parents, some may weigh less than 7 pounds while others may reach up to 13 pounds. Ultimately, it's impossible to be exact.
The amount of time you should be walking your Havanese per day depends on your pup's individual needs. Generally, active and healthy Havanese over one year old should get around 30-45 minutes of exercise per day, with at least 20 of those minutes dedicated to walking. Puppies and senior dogs may not benefit from as long of a walk, so be sure to adjust the length and intensity of the walks according to your pup’s age and physical condition. Walking your Havanese is a great way to bond, provide exercise, and keep your pup mentally stimulated.
Havaneses can make wonderful pets for first-time owners, as they are intelligent, loyal and affectionate. They are relatively small dogs, so they don't require much space or a large yard to get plenty of exercise. They also have a playful spirit, often staying puppy-like well into their old age.
